Hughes has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Systems Engineer located at our headquarters in Germantown, MD.

  • Develop receiver algorithms for mobile satellite systems based on 3G, 4G and evolving 5G systems
  • Develop link budgets and conduct capacity analyses
  • Conduct detailed simulations taking into account LEO and GEO satellite channel characteristics
  • Interface with development teams to translate algorithm design to implementable framework
  • Review air interface specifications and adapt terrestrial standards for efficient operation in satellite environment
  • Document design in System Design Documents (SDD) and contribute to Air Interface specifications
  • Present design to customers during design reviews and Technical Interchange Meetings
  • Develop test vectors to assist development teams in their FPGA development
  • Conduct compliance analyses against ITU, FCC, ETSI and other relevant regulatory restrictions
  • Interface with upper layer teams facilitate end-to-end system design and performance evaluation
  • Develop patent applications and participate in conferences and standards bodies

  • Requirements:
  • Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Communications/Signal Processing
  • 10 or more years of experience in L1/L2 layers of 3G/4G wireless systems
  • 5 or more years of experience in developing physical layer receiver algorithms for 3G/4G terrestrial wireless systems
  • 2 or more years of experience developing link budgets and conduct capacity analyses
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of 3GPP air interface specifications for 3G/4G systems
  • Strong analytical skills and signal processing background
  • Familiarity with FCC, ITU and ETSI Regulatory restrictions in L, S, Ku and Ka bands
  • Familiarity with RF design issues in these bands
  • Good inter-personnel skills and experience presenting designs to customers
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Communications/Signal Processing
