Serves as communications professional responsible for publishing web content to fairfaxcounty.gov about Fairfax County Government programs and services following best practices, accessibility standards and all county policies and procedures. Responsibilities include:
  • Writes, edits, designs and produces content for the county's public website in a deadline-driven environment using the county's web content management system and supporting software/systems.
  • Performs regular reviews of county web content to ensure accuracy, timeliness and relevance.
  • Publishes regular updates to county web pages such as topic areas, meeting information and other countywide issues.
  • Helps with countywide website coordination across all departments and initiatives.
  • Ensures proper coding of content.
  • Produces and assists with website metrics reports and usability studies.
  • Directly assists county departments and offices in publishing web content as requested/assigned.
  • Assists with publishing content on social media, county intranet and all other communication platforms.
  • Designs graphics, edit photos and produce multimedia packages for website, social media and other initiatives.
  • Takes photos and videos of events, people and buildings as needed.
  • Supports countywide public information initiatives.
Illustrative Duties Implements photographic coverage of events;Implements a speaker's bureau;Makes presentations on behalf of the department to community and by County officials;Implements event and meetings;Writes speeches for presentation to community and County;Writes proposals in support of departmental goals and projects;Produces multimedia productions to support the goals of the department (multimedia may include audio, video or online productions);Implements print production projects;Serves as a member of the department's communication planning (strategic planning, action planning) team;Makes public presentations on behalf of department;Responds to requests for information regarding agency/County programs;Provides assistance to agency/County staff as to the most effective means of communicating information to the general public, government employees, and other target groups;May supervise the work of administrative or paraprofessional staff in bringing projects to completion. Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities Ability to write, edit and design for departmental publications;Ability to write for multimedia;Knowledge of photography and planning photography coverage;Knowledge of appropriate standards and formatting for online media;Ability to use current computer software and e-mail systems;Ability to develop or create web sites;Ability to consult with management and other staff;Ability to solve problems;Ability to supervise projects;Ability to manage a budget;Ability to work under pressure;Ability to adapt broadly defined policy guidance to specific situations with a minimal amount of supervision;Ability to work under pressure;Ability to participate in meaningful interchange of views on matters of critical importance to the County;Ability to plan and review the work of others;Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, the press, and County employees. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a bachelor's degree in communication, business administration or a related field, plus three years of progressively responsible experience in communication area of specialization.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Not applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in the area of communications or a related field. Three or more years of experience publishing web content in a professional setting, including using Drupal or other web content management systems. Strong writing and editing skills. Prior working experience in local, state or federal government.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.
This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary. Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
