JOB SUMMARY:

The Defense Health Agency, National Capital Region Medical Directorate (NCR-MD) is the future of Military Medicine- a partnership in World Class Medical Healthcare. The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Dilorenzo Clinic and the Joint Pathology Center, provide world class medical services to the nation's service members and their families.

About the Position:
This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center within the Director for Dentistry, Department of Primary Care Dentistry. This position is in a large, fast-paced group practice setting with 10 dentists and 5 other dental hygienists. Each hygienist has a single operatory with digital radiology capability, an intra-oral camera to capture dental conditions for patient education or pathology referrals and computer for scheduling and workload entry.

    • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • Anesthetic certificate is preferred but not required for this position.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Examining patients' teeth and surrounding tissues to determine abnormal conditions; administering local anesthetics by injection; providing therapeutic care in cases of acute gingivitis and periodontal disease; placing temporary fillings; performing dressing applications and/or taking and developing intraoral and extra-oral x-rays. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    License Requirement: You MUST be currently licensed to practice as dental hygienists in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your licensure.)

    Radiology Certification Requirement: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards of 42 CFR Part 75. They must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.

    Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
