Communications Specialist, Human Resources and Payroll
The George Mason University Human Resources (HR) and Payroll Office is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic individual to serve as a Communications Specialist. Responsibilities: * Write, design and coordinate communications to employees and department liaisons on key initiatives, programs, policies, changes or issues, including: ** Weekly communication to university faculty and staff on HR and Payroll issues, events and opportunities; ** Regular communication with the universityâ€™s HR Liaison network; ** Compilation, drafting and editing of bi-annual newsletters; ** Creating talking points as needed to facilitate communication on HR and Payroll issues; ** Editing all official communication from HR and Payroll; and ** Assessing, editing and creating communications for the HR and Payroll Web site. * Build and foster collaborative relationships with the university community to expand and strengthen marketing efforts and to develop innovative techniques to reach varying constituencies, including prospective and current employees, department heads and leaders; * Collaborate with HR and Payroll colleagues to plan, develop and implement communications strategies; and to execute those communication plans for new programs or initiatives, to include: use of e-mail, Instant HR, Around Mason, HR and Payroll Web site, social media, print media and other media; * Take on special interest projects on an as needed basis; * Design or introduce new policies, guidelines and new programs; * Promote and nominate the university, departments or individuals for recognition opportunities related to employer programs, regional organizations or professional associations; * Serve on various committees as needed and support HR and Payroll outreach and promotion efforts (e.g., Wellness by Mason, etc.); and * Identify opportunities to support departmental and university initiatives, and develop communications materials and programs to promote and publicize these activities in a clear and professional manner.
Required Qualifications: * Strong writing and editing skills; * Experience with Microsoft Office suite of programs; * Social media experience; * Effective interpersonal communication and customer service skills, including tact, diplomacy and confidentiality; * Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple tasks; * Ability to translate technical policies into language and tone which is easily understood by our customers in a friendly and professional manner; * Collaborates and works well with diverse individuals with differing needs; * Bachelorâ€™s degree, or an equivalent combination of training and experience; and * Demonstrated experience in communications or marketing.
Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelorâ€™s degree in writing, journalism, communications, marketing or other applicable programs; * Web content writing skills; * One to three years of experience in communications or marketing; * Higher education experience; and * HR experience.
