Director of Digital User Experience - Office of Advancement

The Director of Digital User Experience develops UX strategy for the websites that connect Georgetown University with alumni, donors, and friends, and expand the community of people and organizations interested in supporting Georgetown's strategic priorities. The Director's scope is closely related to—and often intersects with—that of the head of the digital channel strategy team, who will help guide the director's work (through data-driven analysis of channel performance) and also execute some of the user experiences conceived by the director (e.g., through email template builds). These two leaders work closely to understand needs, propose solutions that align with broader digital strategy, and determine processes and timelines for implementation. They will also collaborate on web platform maintenance and support, ensuring that tasks are routed to the appropriate team members for resolution and stakeholder communications are managed effectively.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Communications, the Director has duties that include but are not limited to:

Development and operationalization of digital user experience strategy

  • Uses user and stakeholder input, Office of Advancement goals, and data-driven insights to develop a coherent, comprehensive user experience strategy.
  • Translates that strategy into tactics/operational plans.
  • Maintains a living roadmap that shows how the strategy is being implemented via specific projects, and on what timeline.
  • Establishes a transparent process for user experience design and implementation.

Oversight of project definition, management, and execution

  • Engages users and stakeholders to understand needs.
  • Translates requests/concepts into concrete, strategy-aligned projects.
  • Establishes appropriate timeline expectations and oversees project plan development.
  • Coordinates and oversees user experience, design, and development workflows.
  • Ensures stakeholders are appropriately enfranchised throughout the project.
  • Ensures on-time, on-budget delivery of work.

Team management

  • Directly supervises team of 3 web developers.
  • Oversees the work of creative and digital channel team members, as necessary.
  • Ensures UX/dev team members have appropriate growth and development opportunities.

Maintenance and support of web platform

  • Works closely with the head of the channel strategy team to ensure that tasks are routed to the appropriate team members for resolution and stakeholder communications are managed effectively.
  • Ensures team maintains and enhances its technical platform expertise.

Leading, consulting, and influencing

  • Collaborates with fellow communications leaders to develop and advance the Office of Advancement's common strategy.
  • Provides strong leadership to team of web developers, clearly articulating goals, laying out strategy, and translating strategy into tactics/plans.
  • Develops and maintains strong, trust-based relationships within and outside the Office of Advancement, with goal of maintaining open lines of communication and having the opportunity to influence key decisions.
  • Develops and enhances reputation as expert in UX strategy through presentations, education, and other communications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years of experience in user experience strategy, ideally in philanthropy and/or higher education
  • Demonstrated skill in designing usable websites
  • 3+ years of supervisory/team management experience, ideally leading teams through simultaneous complex projects
  • Project management experience, and a creative and disciplined approach to process management
  • Deeply conversant in user experience best practice who understands web development.
  • An experienced and respected expert and leader who is able to communicate thoughtfully and in plain language about digital strategy, evolve that strategy to align with changing business needs, and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders within and beyond the Office of Advancement
  • A strong project management background to ensure that projects are well-planned and are delivered on time and on budget
  • Experience creating process flows, site maps, wireframes, prototypes, and functional specifications
  • Facility in extracting and applying lessons from data
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility and preference for collaboration
  • Digital marketing experience preferred
  • HTML/CSS and JavaScript experience preferred
