  • Is eligible for the Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in the area of English as a Second Language

  • Has successful experience as a teacher or administrator with demonstrated expertise in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for English Language Learners

  • Possesses leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and inter-departmental teams

  • Demonstrates interests and skills in the area of transformational leadership

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented, self-directed work environment


ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:


The ELL Instructional Specialist is responsible to the Assistant Superintendent within the Department of Instruction and reports to the ELL Supervisor

JOB DESCRIPTION:  

The ELL Instructional Specialist provides support in the areas of curriculum, instruction and assessment for English Language Learners to ensure improved student achievement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Promotes the use of research-based strategies for school improvement, with a specific focus on transformational leadership to support the achievement of English Language Learners

  • Provides curriculum, instruction and assessment support to district leaders, school leaders, and teachers on a regular basis to encourage the use of strategies that will improve student achievement

  • Identifies and coordinates resources to support the needs of ELLs

  • Promotes a whole child philosophy of instruction that emphasizes personalizing the learning for each child through a shared responsibility for each child

  • In collaboration with the ELL Supervisor and the ELL Staff Development Trainer, targets necessary professional development on delivering high-quality instruction to ELLs using research-based best practices in language acquisition to district leaders, school leaders, and educators

  • Collaborates with the ELL Supervisor to monitor that instruction for ELLs is standard-aligned, rigorous, grade-level appropriate, and provides deliberate and appropriate scaffolds

  • Assists district and school leaders with conducting classroom walkthroughs to monitor the instruction for ELLs allows students to participate equally and meaningfully in all instructional and extracurricular programs

  • Attends district level leadership meetings as assigned

  • Performs related work as required
