Arlington County currently has several full-time Aquatics Instructor positions available in the Arlington County Aquatic Club competitive swim team program, within the Parks and Recreation Department. The Arlington County Aquatic Club is looking for reliable, experienced, knowledgeable, and positive coaches who can work with children ages 6-18 years. The Arlington Aquatic Club (AAC) is a USA Swimming club with just over 500 swimmers. The program is run by Arlington County staff with support from a parent run booster organization. The program operates year round at the Arlington County Public High School pools and includes pre-competitive groups that focus on technique and skill improvement as well as preparing for competitions. The competitive groups improve stroke technique, endurance and race strategy; these groups participate in local, regional and national level meets. Applications are being accepted for the following positions:

Lead Aquatics Instructors: The Lead Aquatics Instructor is responsible for coaching a specific aquatics group, while tailoring instruction to participants needs and evaluating athlete performance. Additionally, the Lead Aquatics Instructor is responsible for coordinating and training a team of Aquatic Instructors, and performing additional administrative and support duties. Lead instructors will support the management staff of the Aquatics program and provide suggestions for program enhancements. 

Specific Duties Include:

  • Coordinates a team of Aquatic instructors;
  • Provides aquatics instruction to assigned team group;
  • Trains staff on curriculum, program procedures and teaching methods;
  • Performs administrative duties supporting assigned team group;
  • Evaluates the performance of instructors, and ensures instructors follow proper safety procedures.


Aquatics Instructors: The Aquatics Instructor is responsible for coaching specific aquatic team group(s), while tailoring instruction to participants needs and evaluating athlete performance. 

Specific Duties Include:

  • Provides aquatics instruction to assigned team group;
  • Prepares for team instruction;
  • Performs administrative duties supporting assigned team group.


 Selection Criteria: Minimum Requirements:
Lead Aquatics Instructor: Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent, plus 1200 hours of technical experience in field related to assignment of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor or coach.

Aquatics Instructor: Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent, plus 800 hours of technical experience in field related to assignment of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor or coach

Lead Aquatics Instructor classification is distinguished from the Aquatics Instructor classification through the level and amount of program support duties. Aquatics Instructors are mainly responsible for instructional delivery while the Lead supervises or coordinates several Aquatics Instructors and performs program support duties, such as training instructor staff members and maintaining and tracking reports, such as attendance records.

Substitution: Additional education in recreation, sports development,sports management and coaching,or a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement,with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Preference may be given to candidates with the following:

  • Previous involvement in a USA Swimming competitive program;
  • Current or previous swimming instruction through coaching or teaching;
  • Experience and skills working with children ages 5 and up;
  • Experience with team operations to include running meets, and helping to coordinate coaching staff and volunteers;
  • Knowledge or skills in Team Unify, Hy-Tek meet manager and/or Team Manager;
  • 2 or 4-year college degree in Recreation or a related field.


 Special Requirements: USA Swimming Coaches Certifications may be required.

A pre-hire background check will be conducted on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history which will require the applicant to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain the background information. 
 Additional Information: Work Hours: Hours are dependent on practice schedule and meet times. Weekly hours will be based on assignment and will be coordinated with the other management staff in the aquatics program. The program operates 7 days a week so shifts may vary based on needs to maintain coverage during regular program hours. All work hours are completed at Arlington County Public School Pools located in Arlington County, Virginia. Main work location is at the pool or at 3700 S. Four Mile Run Dr., Arlington, VA.

The salary range for Lead Aquatics Instructor is $53,019.20-$80,955.20 annually.

The salary range for Aquatics Instructor is $45,822.40-$69,992.00 annually.
