The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) seeks a dynamic and energetic student to join its team and gain valuable work experience as an Human Resources Assistant Intern in the Finance and Administration Directorate, Division of Human Resources, Washington DC.

The purpose of the Pathways Student Internship Program is to provide interns with exposure to public service, enhance educational experience and provide financial support to encourage and support educational goals. The program is formally structured to give interns the opportunity to work in positions related to their academic/career goals. Participants will complete assigned duties, tasks, readings and developmental activities as specified in the program. Selectee is on a trial period while on a Pathway Internship appointment.

This is a temporary, excepted service appointment under the Pathways Internship Program that is expected not-to-exceed one (1) year. This appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed. After successful completion of the program requirements, the individual may, at agency discretion, be converted to the Competitive Service.     As an Intern, you will:

    • Provide technical support in recruitment, staffing and classification activities, including developing new vacancy announcement and applying qualification standards and merit promotion ranking procedures for a wide variety of clerical and technical positions.
    • Review personnel requests to determine the nature of staffing action and the appropiate staff member to receive the action.
    • Provide assistance to personnel in the development of the position descriptions.
    • Prepare biweekly reports; prepare promotion referral certificates, maintains promotion files: prepare and send appropriate letters; maintain position description log and classification standards.
    • Utilize office automation systems and the Federal Personnel/Payroll Systems(FPPS) to complete actions, perform research and complete word processing functions.
    • Provide technical support in employee benefits, employee relations and employee development activities.
