Job Type: Part-Time Temporary Location: 1425 N. Courthouse Road, Arlington "METRO-accessible", Virginia       Arlington County Sheriff's Department is recruiting for a part-time instructor position in the area of alcohol and drug safety. The ASAP Instructor will deliver an approved curriculum to alcohol and drug offenders on behalf of the Arlington, Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP). The employee will be part of a team of instructors who utilize various instructional methods to deliver a pre-specified and established curriculum, complete required reports to provide feedback regarding participation and progress of each class participant, and deliver the reports to the Director and respective ASAP Case Manager.

Duties include:
  • Conducting weekly ASAP classes using State-approved educational curriculum to instruct both court-ordered and voluntary participants;
  • Preparing lesson plans and lecturing on curriculum topics, and facilitating classroom discussion on curriculum topics;
  • Leveraging appropriate and approved audio/visual materials to enhance lecture sessions;
  • Keeping current with alcohol and drug use data and trends for utilization in classroom presentations and discussions;
  • Providing classroom documentation to comply with VASAP requirements, including individual reports for each participant and attendance tracking;
  • Performing random alcohol testing on participants following established procedures; and
  • Preparing and submitting interim and final reports for each participant, and reporting attendance issues to case manager after each session.

 Selection Criteria: Minimums: Associate's degree in education, criminal justice, or similar field PLUS at least one year of experience in the areas of training, facilitation, mentoring, counseling or similar field.

Substitution: Directly related applicable experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Licensed clinical substance abuse counselor;
  • Experience as a substance abuse counselor in an alcohol/drug treatment program;
  • Classroom training experience; and/or
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish.

 Special Requirements: Candidates will be required to undergo a thorough pre-employment character/background investigation (which includes a polygraph examination) and a drug screen test.
 Additional Information: Work hours: This is a part-time and temporary position with varying hours. Individual class sessions run for either 4 or 10 weeks, and are 2 hours in length. Classes are offered Monday through Friday between 4pm-10pm, and Saturdays between 10am-4pm. Hours are subject to change due to operational need. Employee must be available to work at least three days per week and four hours per day, and must also be available to work an occasional Saturday.
