Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in technical writing, journalism, the sciences, engineering, engineering technology or a related field. Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the preparation and writing of technical documents that describe maintenance processes and procedures.
Or, an equivalent combination of post high school education and a minimum of nine (9) years of progressively responsible experience in the preparation and writing of technical documents that describe maintenance processes and procedures.
Ability to successfully complete a medical examination. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.
This position is responsible for researching, developing and updating technical documents, including preventive/corrective maintenance procedures, operations procedures, instructional manuals, equipment specifications and manuals, and technical/safety bulletins and work instructions. Incumbent gathers information from many sources, interacts frequently with subject matter experts and observes maintenance and production activities in order to document procedures and processes in language that is clear and concise for a wide variety of facilities maintenance crafts. Incumbent establishes and updates standards for layout and organization of documentation and maintains historical revision records. Incumbent creates graphical images, flow charts and diagrams for inclusion in documentation.
Researches, develops and updates technical documents, including preventive/corrective maintenance procedures, operations procedures, instructional manuals, equipment manuals, equipment specifications, technical/safety bulletins, work instructions, checklists and scopes of work for procurement actions.
Develops and updates maintenance processes and procedures (for the maintenance of physical plant structures and spaces, mechanical equipment systems, landscaped areas and custodial services) to conform to regulatory, engineering, safety and quality assurance requirements. Coordinates revisions with affected managers.
Gathers information from many sources including regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, NFPA and local jurisdictional building codes) and interacts frequently with subject matter experts to become familiar with maintenance and operations functions and issues. Observes maintenance and production activities in order to document procedures and processes in clear and concise language for a wide variety of crafts.
Studies manufacturer’s manuals, drawings and other data relative to the operation, maintenance and service of equipment. Reviews drawings, specifications and mock-ups to identify technology and operating procedures.
Establishes standards for layout and organization of documentation. Reviews and edits materials written by others.
Creates graphical images, flow charts and diagrams for inclusion in documentation. Creates documents in many formats: printed, electronic and web-based. Arranges for typing, duplication and distribution of documents.
Identifies and implements procedures and processes for ensuring documents are updated. Implements procedures to streamline the documentation and archival process.
Maintains computer records, including historical data, for all documentation prepared.
