General Dynamics IT has an opening for a Backup Engineer with strong communication and technical skills that will support the Department of Commerce 2020 Decennial Census Systems of Systems hybrid cloud infrastructure and its applications.  The Backup Engineer will assist in defining evaluation criteria for determining the current solution architecture of systems; working with the Systems Engineering team to decompose business level requirements into system and solution level requirements; assisting architecture with selecting the appropriate technological solutions to meet the business requirements; implementing the solution(s) required to fulfill the system and solution level requirements; performing test and validation activities to prove backup and recovery effectiveness and readiness during critical test events leading up to the 2020 survey and the 2020 survey; and the operations of backup and recovery.

 

Specific roles & responsibilities for the position include but not limited to the following:

    Contributes to the formulation and maintenance of an enterprise-wide backup and recovery strategy to ensure timely and effective restoration of IT services and resumption of business activities.Define evaluation criteria and questionnaires for assessment teams to determine a system or application’s current native recoverability and availability capabilities.Provide input to the DevOps engineering staff on the backup and recoverability of systems, machines, operating systems, applications, file level, disk, and datastore level.Provides input on the development of an Analysis of Alternatives for BCDR solution(s).Provides input on the selection of an Enterprise BCDR solution(s) which meets cost and schedule constraints and satisfies recoverability, availability and business continuity targets.Provides input on the development of design, implementation, user guides, and training materials.Performs training for engineering and operations staff as required.Provides input on the development of Service Level Agreements, Recovery Point Objectives, and Recovery Time Objectives.Provides input on evaluation, selection, implementation and maintenance of IT systems, ensuring appropriate investment in strategic and operational systems. Provides responsive advice, counsel, education and service concerning IT issues and trends in the IT industry.Maintains knowledge and understanding of current and emerging technologies, equipment and systems. Keeps current on laws, mandates, issues, practices and procedures.Plans, leads, organizes and controls projects related to selection, acquisition, development and installation of IT systems for the enterprise. Determines operational, technical, tactical, and support requirements; formulates logic; and devises optimum solutions.Reviews and provides input to policies and standard operating procedures.Performs other related duties as assigned.
 

 Required Skills:

    10 full-time years of experience; prior consulting, Professional Services and/or Enterprise Experience preferred.Must have advanced level knowledge of the concepts, practices and procedures of the field of specialization.Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) version 3 or higher certification required or obtained within one (1) year of accepting position.Vendor Storage and Backup certifications preferred.Relevant knowledge of current and emerging technologies.Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel, elected officials, executive leadership, senior management, users, vendors and subcontractor personnel.Ability to consistently meet and exceed expectations and incorporate customer service into all aspects of work.Proven judgment and problem solving skills.Solid time management skills while consistently providing outstanding customer service.Detail-oriented, proactive self-starter demonstrating a positive, willing attitude and excellent oral and written communication skills.Proficient in Datacenter and Cloud technologies.Proficient in defining and performing to RTO/RPO.Proficient in determining the appropriate strategy for recoverability and continuity of business operations.

Education  

 

    10+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work/military experience.
