JOB SUMMARY:

About the Agency

This position is located in the East Asia and Pacific Division's Vietnamese Service at the Voice of America in Washington, DC. The incumbent serves as a International Broadcaster in a multimedia environment and is responsible for generating quality coverage of stores/interviews/events plus technical work of producing this coverage for multimedia distribution.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors is conveniently located within walking distance to the Green, Orange, Silver, Yellow, and Blue Metro lines.

INTRODUCTION TO AGENCY
The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency, is an exciting, multi-cultural organization that encompasses all United States civilian international broadcasting. The BBG is comprised of five networks broadcasting in 61 languages that include the Voice of America, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti), and three grantee organizations - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), and Radio Free Asia. The International Broadcasting Bureau provides transmission, administrative, and other support services; and three grantee organizations. Our staff of dedicated professionals serve as an example of a free and independent media, reaching a worldwide audience of 215 million people with news, information, and relevant discussions.

  • Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level which is directly related to this line of work AND must be bilingual in the Vietnamese and English with the ability to fluently speak, research, write and accurately translate in both languages.

    Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of such experience includes writing, editing, interviewing, reporting and broadcasting stories for radio and television and preparing material for websites and digital media in the Vietnamese language. Must have demonstrated knowledge of Vietnam, its history, economics, culture, and socio-political development.

    Applicant cannot substitute education for experience.

    Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a security investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The security investigation will include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.

    DUTIES:

    Duties include, but are not limited to:

    -Write news-related stories for use of radio, TV and/or Internet using a variety of sources.
    -Perform difficult translations and adaptations of a variety of centrally prepared English-language news and features in Vietnamese.
    -Prepare well-balanced scripts for radio, TV reports and text for digital content that capture the attention of the audience.
    -Conduct interviews on political economic, scientific, cultural and other subjects.
    -Engage in on-line audience in a conversation by encouraging their comments and selectively responding.
    -Select, edit, adapt and upload Vietnamese Service news, reports, features, photographs, graphics, and audio/video elements onto the Vietnamese Services website, social media sites and digital syndication site.
    -Keep abreast of current developments in Vietnam in order to plan and develop program materials.
