Coding Specialist, Senior

Key Role:

Consult on complex projects, including advising on the design, integration, and implementation. Apply principles, methods, and knowledge related to medical coding and reimbursement. Conduct advanced research to identify revenue cycle system issues and help to define automated solutions. Support analysis and evaluation. Provide recommendations for system improvements, optimization, development, and maintenance efforts in healthcare information systems architecture, project and operations scheduling, automation, communications protocols, risk management and electronic analysis, and software and life cycle management. Rely on extensive experience and judgment, leveraging knowledge gained through previous experience to plan and accomplish goals.


Basic Qualifications:

-10+ years of experience in coding, including Advanced ICD-10-CM, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding, with 5+ of those years of experience in the Military Health System

-Experience with health administration and clinical services, including allied health 

-Experience with Electronic Health Record deployment processes

-Experience with a variety of health systems implementation concepts, practices, and procedures

-Knowledge of reimbursement for inpatient and outpatient care

-Knowledge of health IT systems, including coding applications, such as 3M CCE and 360, patient accounting systems, claims intermediary and clearinghouse services, practice management systems, and electronic health records

-Ability to interact efficiently with other civilian, military, and contract personnel

-Ability to obtain a security clearance

-BA or BS degree

-Certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist-P, or certification from the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), CPC-Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)


Additional Qualifications:

-Experience with coding for surgical and non-surgical provider specialties, same day surgery and hospital outpatient, and emergency room

-Experience with the Cerner Millennium Electronic Health Record

-Secret clearance preferred

-BA or BS degree in Health Information Management preferred; MA or MS degree in a related field, including Health Care Administration, Health Systems Management, Systems Management, or Systems Engineering
