Traffic Controller, Parking Garage - Office of Transportation Management

The Traffic Controller monitors and enforces University parking and traffic rules and regulations, including issuing citations and removing vehicles that hinder safety and are in violation of regulations. Reporting to the Senior Operations Manager of Transportation Management, the Traffic Controller has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Enforces University parking and traffic regulations to provide for public safety and to ensure availability of parking spaces for registered parkers and authorized visitors and University vehicles.
  • Patrols University roadways, parking garages, and surface lots for vehicles in violation of University regulations.
  • Issues citations to vehicles parked in fire lanes or other improperly parked vehicles on University grounds; and removes or boots vehicles with 3 or more citations.
  • Operates and maintains tow trucks, pick-up trucks, and similar equipment and tools for purpose of patrolling University grounds and booting and moving illegally parked vehicles; fixes broken gate arms; performs general maintenance of gate equipment; and makes minor register adjustments.
  • Maintains records of daily activities including citations issued, vehicles removed/booted, and vehicle maintenance activities in order to provide for accurate tracking of enforcement and other activities. 
  • Provides assistance and information to University community members and visitors to the University to encourage a positive University image; explains University parking and transportation regulations and services; and gives directions to University buildings.
  • Directs traffic for special events and performs related tasks, as needed.
  • Provides motorist assistance such as jump starts, flat repairs, and towing to a legal space.


Requirements

  • High school diploma or certified equivalency
  • Experience in customer service or any equivalent combination of training and experience - Experience in operating a tow truck preferred
  • Possess valid DC, VA or MD driver's license, and, if hired, qualify as an authorized University driver

The Traffic Controller is subject to random and for cause drug and alcohol testing.

The Traffic Controller may be required to operate University commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10K+ (e.g., tow trucks, box trucks, trash trucks, buses, lifts). As such, the Traffic Controller must possess a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed “medical examiner,” after completion of a DOT physical examination as defined in  GU Policy 1017 and DOT Regulations 391.11 (4) - Medical Card/Certificate and 390.5 (1) - Commercial Motor Vehicles (10K+) Definitions (http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov).
