The Kingsbury Center is one of the oldest nonprofit educational institutions in the Washington area that addresses the special needs of young children, adolescents and adults who experience learning difficulties. The Center is seeking a Teacher Assistant for this school year. We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience and education.

Under the direction of the administrative team, the Dedicated Aide collaborates with the Lead Teacher to create, implement and support the daily lesson plan and classroom instruction.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Use information and data from a variety of sources to understand student’s instructional needs and progress against Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) goals
  • Evaluate and synthesize for instructional practices each student’s learning style, motivators and other factors impacting student’s ability to learn
  • Facilitate individualized academic and behavior management strategies to improve behavior and as a driver for instruction
  • Collaborate with the lead teacher to implement and support the daily lessons plan and classroom instruction
  • Demonstrate understanding of the curriculum in the classroom and knowledge of the content area
  • Under the direction of the classroom teacher, develop classroom materials designed to meet curriculum content standards
  • Assist the lead teacher with the development of individualized programs
  • Address multiple intelligences of each student through lesson plans and materials
  • Conduct small and/or large group instruction in specified academic areas
  • Accompany and supervise students for specialty classes, related services, recess and lunch breaks
  • Collect and record data on student performance for IEP/ILP
  • Assume lead teaching role in the absence of the teacher
  • Assist young students with personal hygiene, meals and other daily activities
  • Keep members of the classroom teaching team, lead teacher and appropriate related service providers informed of progress and challenges regarding the student
  • Use appropriate teaching materials and assistive technologies to facilitate learning
  • Assist the teacher in coordinating activities with teachers and related service providers
  • Maintain student records and documentation
  • Work with the teaching team to ensure the classroom contains sufficient supplies and materials for individualized instructional supports
  • Collaborate with the teaching team to evaluate instructional effectiveness and to modify instructional approaches

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related discipline or combined relevant experience and number of credits that would equate to a Bachelor’s degree
  • Must have at least one year of experience working with children with learning differences
  • Knowledge of current instructional and positive behavior management techniques, assistive aids and curriculum scope and sequence
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education best practices
  • Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication
  • Able to change daily routine to meet the changing needs of students
  • Able to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Able to stand, move throughout the campus, operate a computer, ascend and descend stairs, stoop, kneel and crouch
  • Able to lift, move or transport equipment and/or furniture weighing up to 15 pounds across campus to various classrooms and events
  • Able to work in outdoor weather conditions
