IT Network Engineer, Unified Communications Engineer
The Unified Communications Engineer position plans and implements Cisco VOIP platform including endpoint activations, and providing collaboration services that enhance the teaching and working presence of the staff and faculty. The engineer is expected to be the lead for departmental projects and action, providing accurate planning and estimations of cost and time for projects. This includes meeting with stakeholders, gathering and documenting requirements, requesting and pulling resources in order to coordinate efforts. The candidate will be expected to create and document designs and proposals and to collaborate with team members to implement them. Documentation of work to include design, diagrams, specifications and build documents, requirements and test plans along with schedules and estimates.
The position will provide overall design, development and support for the University of Maryland’s telephone and collaboration infrastructure. This may involve lifecycle management, and support of network, communications equipment and services, including but not limited to (VOIP, TDM and analog) automatic call distribution, voicemail, audio/web/video conferencing, email, instant messaging, presence and related systems.
The team is in the process of transferring from an Avaya system to Cisco, and the candidate will be expected to mentor members in the fundamentals of VOIP, TCP, SIP and other newer technologies. The candidate will guide and review work and task to increase knowledge and efficiency.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in IT or relevant technical degree or equivalent experience. Equivalency: four years of related work experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree.
Must have six years of experience with building enterprise platforms and services.
Three years of Cisco Unified Communication /Telephony experience.
Experience in large scale mission critical networks.
Experience with Integrating systems using an LDAP based identity management systems.
Advanced knowledge of communications services and protocols (SIP, SMTP).
Technical knowledge of WebEx, Google Suite, Cisco Call Center, Cisco Call Manager, communication gateways.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Flexible and able to quickly switch between projects.
Scripting and integration using Perl, Ruby or other scripting languages.
Experience with Cisco telephone products, WebEx, and Google Suites.
Credibility through knowledge and expertise.
Experience with conference and desktop video systems.
Effectively communicates concepts with various levels of the organization.
Professionalism and ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
Computer proficiency including experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite and ServiceNow.
Related certifications are desirable.
Experience in a higher education environment is preferred, but not required.
Technical knowledge of and experience working with current and future infrastructure, including:
• Redsky e911 and Cisco Emergency Responder.
• Network services, such as DNS, DHCP and SNMP.
• Programming languages and techniques (C/C++, Perl, Java, Python, PHP), web-based application development, relational database application development, and user interface design.
Experience with desktop video communications and video conferencing, preferably with Cisco.
• Identify problems in the enterprise network infrastructure and propose solutions.
• Design, implement and support network security services.
• Integrate disparate systems.
• Identify functions that can be improved by process development and implementation.
• Meet with customers and obtain specific requirements.
• Work independently, as well as within a team environment.
• Prepare purchase requisitions, and SOWs with executive summaries and backup documentation.

Predominantly operates in an office environment, though significant periods of time will be spent in computer room and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work requires moving and lifting of heavy communications equipment.
