Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor=s Degree in Computer Science, Business Administration or related field with at least six (6) years of experience in a data processing environment. More than three (3) years experience supporting a Microsoft Active Directory-based, 24x7x365 enterprise environment, including configuration, implementation, administration, and troubleshooting in a large-scale user environment distributed across multiple locations. At least three (3) years of hands-on experience administering the latest versions of open systems software and hardware. At least three (3) years of hands-on experience with the latest open systems and high availability (HA) hardware platforms. At least two (2) years of experience with scripting in UNIX, Linux, Oracle, and SQL Server. At least two (2) years of experience with patch management, using enterprise tools such as Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
OR, an equivalent combination of post-high school education and eight (8) years experience in a data processing environment. More than five (5) years experience supporting a Microsoft Active Directory-based, 24x7x365 enterprise environment, including configuration, implementation, administration, and troubleshooting in a large-scale user environment distributed across multiple locations. At least four (4) years of hands-on experience administering the latest versions of open systems software and hardware. At least four (4) years of hands-on experience with the latest open systems and high availability (HA) hardware platforms. At least three (4) years of experience with scripting in UNIX, Linux, Oracle, and SQL Server. At least four (4) years of experience with patch management, using enterprise tools such as Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
IT certifications in the technologies pertaining to this position are desirable.

This highly technical position is responsible for supporting and managing open systems servers and software technology within the WMATA 24x7x365 enterprise environment. The incumbent designs, manages, migrates and maintains multiple enterprise technologies and applications and implements open systems software standards. The incumbent configures and clusters disaster recovery technologies; configures and manages databases for high availability and creates and executes Windows, UNIX, Linux, Oracle and SQL Server scripting to ensure optimal performance of IT assets in the WMATA enterprise environment. The incumbent works with database administrators and other technical groups to ensure open systems technologies are updated and patched in accordance with manufacturer mandates and industry standards; ensures the entire open systems infrastructure is infused with the latest hardware and software technology advancements; maintains functional knowledge of the latest high availability systems, patches, and hardware to enable incumbent to stay up to date regarding the latest open systems administration trends, concepts, practices, and procedures; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals; and exercises a wide degree of creativity and latitude. This work is provided for the Department of Information Technology’s Office of Data Center and Infrastructure.
Performs tasks as assigned to ensure all open systems applications and platforms within the WMATA WAN are maintained and operating properly. Ensures open systems operations through the design, management, migration and maintenance of multiple enterprise technologies and applications.
Manages Windows and Veritas Cluster Server high availability technologies and procedures.
Configures and clusters disaster recovery technologies and manages databases for high availability, and creates and executes Windows, UNIX, Linux, Oracle and SQL Server scripting to ensure optimal performance of IT assets in the WMATA 24x7x365 enterprise environment.
Ensures open systems technologies are updated and patched in accordance with manufacturer mandates and industry standards, as well as, the entire open systems infrastructure is infused with the latest hardware and software technology advancements.
Responsible for the maintenance, support and operations of all open systems within the WMATA WAN.
Develops policies and procedures for implementing open systems administration best practices.
Available for after-hours and weekend support of critical servers as necessary.
Ensures compliance with established Service Level Agreements (SLAs), change management policies and security policies.
Responsible for the design and review of the HA infrastructure and provides top tier support, administering, monitoring, and troubleshooting of open systems devices.
Installs, supports, and maintains HA hardware and systems and plans for and responds to service outages and other problems.
Develops HA system design, configuration, testing and evaluation, and related network configuration documentation and responds to HA monitoring system alerts to evaluate and remedy identified problems.
Researches, evaluates and recommends new technologies and maintains effective communications with vendors, peers and clients in support of assigned projects.
Develops project plans, task schedules, test and evaluation plans, and system design documents.
