Fitness Coordinator

The George Mason University Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center, within the Science and Technology Campus, is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic person for Fitness Coordinator. Responsibilities: * Oversees the effective delivery of a comprehensive program of fitness and wellness activities; * Responsible for developing and implementing a broad range of year-round specialty revenue driven/fee-based programming (general public, youth, school and community groups, the elderly, and the corporate market) with specific benefits and purpose in line with the Purpose of the Organization; and * Manages the strength training and cardiovascular training areas of the Center, the design and delivery of a comprehensive personal training programs, reconciliation of department revenue goals and management of: ** The personal training department; ** Specialized fitness programs; ** Ongoing training and development for fitness professionals; and ** Internal marketing and promotions.

Personnel Management: * Develop and implement an approved staffing plan for the fitness operation; * Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff in accordance with department and university guidelines; * Assimilate and disseminate a comprehensive body of information to staff to ensure effective team functioning, employee development and achievement of performance standards; and * Provide leadership, mentoring, and training to all staff.

Facility Management: * Provide and maintain a safe and secure fitness facility for customers and staff; * Ensure efficient and effective fitness operations; * Develop and implement an equipment maintenance plan to provide the highest level of cleanliness, convenience and comfort to the customers and staff; * Develop and implement customer service policies, systems, and training programs that provide for pleasant, timely, and knowledgeable service; * Develop and implement fitness department policies and procedures; and * Coordinate the purchase of supplies and equipment; review specifications, prepare requisitions and confirm accuracy of invoices; and serve as liaison to vendors and contractors.

Program Management: * Develop effective long-range expansion and program plans through research, observance of customer use, and defined market strategies to coincide with improved service levels; * Ensure that effective delivery systems are in place to facilitate programming and revenue generation; * Coordinate all fitness programming: develop program guidelines, policies and procedures related to all fitness programming; establish criteria for creating new programs in keeping with patron interests and current researched industry trends; and maintain a wide variety of program choices to meet the needs of a diverse community; * Develop and implement plans to cross-market personal training, wellness assessments and other center programs to maximize effectiveness and cohesiveness of fitness programming; * Coordinate and assist in research, assessment and program/service evaluation for all programs and services, including the Human Performance Laboratory; and * Develop evaluation tools to assess individuals and programs and to provide regular feedback to staff.

Fiscal Management: * Prepare and monitor an annual fitness budget, and provide input on the center’s long-range operating plan; and * Prepare, analyze, and maintain accountability for participation statistics, payroll, and all financial transactions.

Administration and Planning: * Develop and evaluate short- and long-term planning strategies and policies related to facility and program development and revenue generation; and * Compose, compile, and present quarterly and annual reports summarizing the accomplishments and challenges in the fitness department.

Professional Development: * Continue to develop professionally through membership and participation in applicable professional organizations and developmental workshops; and * Actively participate in the educational process of Mason students, faculty, and staff through their interaction with our programs and services.

Other Duties: * Perform other duties as requested by the Assistant General Manager.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, recreation, athletic administration, physical education, or a related field; * NCCA Certified Personal Trainer certification(s); * Four or more years of graduate or professional experience in a recreation or fitness setting; * Experience in supervising and managing employees; and * Personal training and experience in proper use and management of cardiovascular and weight training equipment.

Preferred Qualifications: * Computer experience (database and word processing software).
