Survey Crew Leader – Grade 19
This is lead-level work directing a field crew involved in land surveying in the Department of Transportation's Division of Transportation Engineering Transportation Planning and Design Section. This person is responsible for contacts include agency engineers, subordinates, contractors, utility companies and property owners to exchange information and explain projects.
Employee duties include lead work of the survey crew to re-establish existing right of way and boundary lines, and to locate topographic features, both for the design and construction of County roads and associated structures, independently conduct assignments received from the supervisor and review for accuracy of data obtained. Employee will be responsible to follow guidelines consist of survey principles and practices; equipment operating procedures and specifications; Federal, State and County regulations and Department procedures. Duties include finding various surveying alternatives that are most efficient and adapt and modify guidelines and redirect team effort based on varying field conditions; organize survey work, assess field conditions, and determine proper survey course and procedures; will be responsible for the accuracy of right-of-way design, construction stake-out and property boundaries, will work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Employee will be responsible for walking over rough terrain; frequent bending, crouching or stooping; occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds; and precise use of hands or fingers to operate survey equipment and exposure to as vehicular traffic, noise and exhaust fumes, and working around open trenches and construction areas which involve the use of safety equipment such as reflective vests and safety shoes
Experience: Thorough (five years) experience in the procedures, practices, use of equipment, and conduct of land and construction survey work.
Education: Graduation from high school or High School Certificate completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
LICENSE: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence.
1. Experience with surveying on transportation projects using rod/chain, GPS, stakes and other survey instruments.
2. Experience with boundary and topographic surveys, and construction stakeout.
3. Experience managing, leading and directing a survey crew.
4. Experience reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications.
