Web and Design Developer - Office of Advancement

The Web and Design Developer participates in the design and backend development of Web and multimedia presence and processes.  S/he works with the multimedia team on website design for the various sites, page creation, and backend development for all multi-platform efforts; and, working closely with internal clients, manages numerous requests for site development on a prioritized and timely basis. The Web and Design Developer builds and maintains the site in conjunction with the interactive/multimedia team and in their multimedia efforts to advance Georgetown's presence on the Web. Reporting to the Director of Interactive Communications, the Web and Design Developer has duties that include but are not limited to:


  • Translates marketing or informational content into a functional website or other multimedia platform design.
  • Creates original graphic elements - such as banners and button - when needed.
  • Produces graphic illustrations, designs, and layouts for online content, determining sizes and arrangements of illustrative material.
  • Copies, selects styles and sizes of type, and arranges layout based upon available space, knowledge of layout principles, and aesthetic design concepts.
  • Designs and develops web sites to ensure that the "look and feel" supports both the
    organization's strategies and goal, and facilitates user interaction with the system.
  • Creates and develops visually aesthetic and appropriate graphics for the web, while maintaining usability and accessibility of the web site and other online presences.
  • Applies knowledge of web-based technologies and usability, 508 accessibility issues, and a thorough knowledge of HTML, XHTML, CSS, PhotoShop, Dreamweaver and other design-related applications.

Application/Feature Development Support

  • Develops user interface features, site animation, and special-effects (Flash) elements.
  • Contributes to site and social media efforts by creating “basic” applications for social platforms per internal/external specifications.
  • Develops applications/features across the mobile platform, leading the entire app lifecycle from concept stage to delivery and post launch support.

Web Development Support

  • Supplements web development team efforts by updating content and graphic elements of established pages/microsites as assigned.
  • Builds web pages/microsites using a variety of graphic software applications, techniques and tools as assigned.

Multimedia Development

  • Works with digital media.
  • Creates Flash or other animation as directed.
  • Optimizes all forms of media for Web publication.


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Extensive knowledge of HyperText Markup Language (HTML), developing web-based applications in Active Server Pages (ASP) on Microsoft Internet Information Server/Services (IIS), page layout techniques, complex table construction, Cascading Style sheets, and graphical and non-graphical design solutions
  • Experience in developing Web pages using relational databases such as MS SQL Server and MS Access, web technologies, web programming languages, and graphical programs
  • Knowledge of cross-browser issues and the ability to create applications that run on multiple browsers
  • Extensive project management skills
  • Ability to work with graphic software such as Photoshop and Fireworks
  • Excellent problem-solving, prioritizing, communications, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
