The George Mason University Office of the Provost seeks a full-time Academic Program Advisor at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC) (http://smconservation.gmu.edu), and the School of Integrative Studies (SIS) within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). The position will be based jointly between SMSC, located at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) (https://nationalzoo.si.edu/conservation) in Front Royal, Va., and the Fairfax, Va., campus. The Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation offers a range of compelling residential, hands-on, interdisciplinary programs in conservation biology for undergraduate and graduate students and professionals. This program focuses on building conservation-related skills and professional development opportunities for individuals interested in becoming conservation professionals.
Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of this position are to support the recruitment and admission activities for students interested in the academic programs at the SMSC; and to foster increased collaboration among the CHSS, the College of Science (COS), and other partner colleges/schools/universities. The incumbent will: * Support the Associate Director of Recruitment and Outreach in efforts to implement marketing strategies, student application and enrollment processes, and advising for future semesters at SMSC; * Serve as the liaison between CHSS and SMSC, keeping the SIS faculty engaged at SMSC for student recruitment purposes, curriculum changes, etc.; * Be responsible for 1:1:1 teaching load in courses related to conservation and sustainability; * Serve as an advisor for the Environmental and Sustainability Studies degree, meeting with incoming and current students to discuss education and graduation goals, assisting with events such as orientation sessions, and recruiting potential freshmen and transfer students; * Serve as the liaison between the high school summer programs (e.g., the Washington Youth Summit on Environment), outside faculty members, and SMSC; * Assist in creating new topics and curriculums for the programs and shepherd them through approval processes; * Work closely with Admissions to ensure students are properly registered and processed into the Mason system and receive the correct course credits for the summer program; and * Handle the logistics of the high school summer programs as an event, including the coordination of speakers, travel, budget, housing, etc.
This position will report to both the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Outreach, SMSC, and to the Executive Director, SIS. Annual performance reviews will incorporate input and feedback from both the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Outreach, SMSC and the Executive Director, SIS. Regular communication throughout the year will support and enhance the goals for this position.
Duties: * Support the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Outreach in all aspects of the enrollment process (i.e., application, admission, advising, deposit, course registration, etc.); * Assist with the development of print and online marketing materials, recruitment materials, press releases and public relations materials; * Update and monitor information on department websites and social media sites; * Staff special events, college fairs, transfer events, class and campus visits, and orientation sessions; * Coordinate site visits and tours; * Serve as point of contact for students interested in the SMSC high school summer programs; * Coordinate the high school summer program, including housing, dining, travel, speaker and guest arrangements, and ensuring students receive the correct course credit and 1098-T forms; * Serve as liaison between CHSS and SMSC; * Serve as advisor for the Environmental and Sustainability Studies degree, meeting with and advising incoming and current students on education plans, degree evaluations, graduation requirements, etc.; and * Teach and/or co-teach a series of courses for NCC related to conservation and sustainability.
Required Qualifications: * Masters degree in communication, conservation, environmental science or a related field; * Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and * Must be willing to travel and work evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications: * Previous admissions and academic advising experience; and * University experience is appreciated.
