Assistant Director, Employer Development
George Mason University Career Services is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic individual for the position of Assistant Director of Employer Development. Purpose of the Position: Provide leadership to the Industry Advising and Employer Development (IAED) Team in developing, maintaining and enhancing a strong employer community at Mason. This position will advise and support student career readiness by providing individualized strategy, employer insight, and educational programming to increase opportunities for students to connect with employers. Provides direct industry advising to students and alumni.
The Assistant Director will manage and oversee key employer relations programs (e.g., On-Campus Interviewing [OCI] and Career Fairs) and supervise full- and part-time professional staff. This position participates actively in developing goals/objectives, initiatives, evaluating programs and services, and partnering with the Associate Directors and Director. Works closely and collaboratively with Associate Director for Industry Advising and Employer Development to develop and offer staff trainings, to identify and share trends and resources, and to create programming and events for students. Serves on cross-functional teams to develop strong relationships with academic units and other administrative offices.
Duties: Leadership Responsibilities include: * In partnership with the Associate Director, Industry Advising and Employer Development, develop strategic goals/objectives and initiatives for the team; evaluate programs and services, and contribute to the Leadership Team discussions related to center-wide initiatives/changes. As requested, provide management of office operations and represent career services to the campus community; * Consult and collaborate effectively and regularly with Associate Director, other Assistant Directors, and Director to share industry, employer, and other relevant information; and to create/implement services and programs that anticipate or respond to trends in the preparation, recruiting and hiring of students; * Engage industry advising and employer development staff in assessing existing services and programs offered to students and employers, and identifying new services; * Oversee/develop relevant employer and faculty policies and procedures (e.g., on-campus interviews, job/internship postings, recruiting processes, etc.); and * Analyze and utilize tracked data and assessments to make informed, critical decisions.
Staff Supervision and Development Responsibilities include: * Provide direction, guidance and supervision to full- and part-time direct reports. Provide support and assistance in setting performance goals, reaching goals, and engaging in self-appraisal. Conduct annual appraisals; * Encourage and provide opportunities for staff development and growth. Showcase and encourage successful staff effort at the campus, local, regional and national levels; * Continually improve by seeking professional development opportunities/feedback on supervision style and approaches to better enhance staff development, morale and cohesion; and * Resolve complaints/issues elevated by supervisees.
Employer Development and Relations Responsibilities include: * In collaboration with the Associate Director and other Assistant Director, create and implement the employer development strategic plan for building and facilitating connections leading to recruitment of Mason students; assess and refine annually; * Manage key employer relations programs and services in collaboration with the IAED Team and Associate Director; * Establish, develop and manage recruiting efforts for on- and off-campus initiatives, and oversee the development and enforcement of policies related to HireMason and OCI; * Identify employer needs and recommend recruiting options, strategies and sponsorship opportunities; * Manage Symplicity NACElink system; * Work with employers to post jobs and market positions via Symplicity NACElink and other marketing channels; * Comanage the Employer Advisory Board, and in collaboration with the Board Chair, the Director, and the Associate Director--develop and coordinate the agendas for biannual meetings. Will serve as main point of contact with board members throughout the year; * Support leadership in the development and implementation of the University Career Services Corporate Partner Program by coordinating partner events, conducting site visits with designated Industry Advisors, ensuring campus-wide recognition of partner gifts, and providing suggestions on potential leads; * Raise awareness of and interest in Mason and its students by targeting and cultivating relationships with employers and alumni through individual outreach and special events; * Advise employers on strategies for successful branding and recruiting at Mason; and * Provide leadership for the scheduling and execution of various recruiting events.
Individual and Group Industry Advising and Outreach Responsibilities include: * Provide industry-specific advising to students and alumni by serving as center expert for the accounting, consulting and finance industry areas; maintaining current information on recruiting practices, timelines and industry trends. Educate and prepare students on the specifics of their job/internship search strategy, including document review, networking techniques, interview prep, and salary negotiation. Assist students in leveraging the use of social media and other technology in their search strategy; * Present educational workshops on a variety of career topics and create, customize and execute employer/alumni/student networking events and educational panels; * Consider the needs of academic stakeholders and provide industry-specific programming that meets the interests of Mason students and employers; * Contribute to the development of online content, and video and print media and resources; and * Manage biweekly career e-mail blasts to students in the accounting, consulting and finance industries.
Cross-Functional Teams and University Initiatives include: * Serve on various cross-functional teams to promote the vision and direction of University Career Services; and contribute to the strategic planning in order to evolve center services and programs; * Serve as a liaison to university departments as appropriate; * Represent Mason and the center in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards and changes, revise programs to reflect trends, and increase the centers visibility among professionals in the field; and * Participate in university committees providing representation of the career center on community issues.
Required Qualifications: * A masters degree in higher education, counseling, human resources, or a related field; * Demonstrated professional experience in counseling/advising on career, internship and job search issues or in a human resources/talent acquisition environment in higher education; * Demonstrated supervisory experience or role as a team lead/trainer; * Excellent event planning/coordination and program management, including demonstrated outstanding verbal and written communication, organizational ability, marketing, and database management skills; * Experience serving and supporting diverse student populations; and * Ability to use Symplicity or other campus career management systems and MS Office.
Preferred Qualifications: * Two years of supervisory experience or role as a team lead/trainer; * Two years of full-time, professional experience in counseling/advising on career, internship, and job search issues or in a human resources/talent acquisition environment in higher education; * History of providing exceptional customer service for students, faculty and/or employers; * Knowledge of accounting, finance and consulting industries and their recruiting and hiring practices; * Ability to embrace and drive change, to organize and to manage multiple priorities, programs, and projects both independently and in a team; * Demonstrated initiative and strong follow-through; * Experience administering/interpreting career assessments (e.g., SII, MBTI, StrengthsQuest); and * Ability to work and collaborate cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment with a broad range of internal and external constituents including students, employers, alumni, faculty and staff.
