The George Mason University Institute for Immigration Research (, within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, invites applications for a one-year, renewable position as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Responsibilities: The successful candidates areas of specialization will include immigration, economic, social and political consequences of migration, quality of life, and overall issues related to immigration policy. This position is critical to the success of the Institute for Immigration Research (IIR), requiring the full understanding of and active participation in the mission of the IIR.

The incumbent reports to and is managed by the Director of the IIR and is expected to:

  • Manage the Immigration Data on Demand (iDod) service (an IIR data system that is user-oriented and designed to provide objective and actionable information for public end users) by responding to data requests and maintaining/improving the system for public use;
  • Pursue research projects, including publishing in academic venues, presenting at academic conferences, preparing grant proposals, and the development of new research endeavors;
  • Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in their acquisition of skills and preparation of research materials; and
  • Represent the IIR in various public settings, to include collaborative efforts with the Immigrant Learning Center of Malden, Mass., the publication of research in public venues, and responses to media inquiries.

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned Ph.D.--or have completed it by the start date of the position--in sociology, anthropology, political science, economics, demography, or a related field;
  • Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS;
  • Advanced quantitative research skills;
  • Excellent written communication skills demonstrated by prior publications; and
  • Technical competency to adapt to new technological systems.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced qualitative research skills;
  • Experience supervising and mentoring students;
  • The ability to manage/oversee multiple projects;
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary research teams;
  • Advanced knowledge of:
  • SPSS (syntax-based coding);
  • Discovertext;
  • NodeXL;
  • Qualtrics;
  • SQL or database competency; and
  • Microsoft Office suite.
