Term Assistant Professor, Director of Creative Writing

The George Mason University English Department seeks a full-time, 12-month Term Assistant Professorship to serve as Director of the masters and bachelors of fine arts (MFA and BFA) programs in Creative Writing and to teach undergraduate Creative Writing courses. Responsibilities: With support from the Assistant Director and the Executive Committee, the Director of Creative Writing oversees all aspects of the program, including student recruitment (including sequence of open houses), faculty and staff recruitment, new student orientation and annual preparation of MFA handbooks, marketing (including Web site and social media), fundraising from outside sources, development, course rotations and curriculum development at both graduate and undergraduate levels, assignment of thesis advisors, administering of 46 teaching assistantships and four third-year thesis fellowships, alumni outreach, and the Visiting Writers Program. This position coordinates with several autonomous student publications (e.g., Phoebe, So To Speak, and The George Mason University Review) and with other related organizations such as the Fall for the Book Festival, Stillhouse Press, and Alan Cheuse International Writers Center. This position teaches two undergraduate Creative Writing courses per semester.

The Director of Creative Writing serves the program and its faculty as liaison to the English Department and the university administration, and supervises a Creative Writing Assistant Director as well as two Administrative Assistants shared with the English Department. This position meets regularly with the English Chair and with the Creative Writing Executive Committee, which consists of a faculty member from each concentration.

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an MFA or Ph.D. in English or a related field; be a writer with a proven record of excellence in administration in an academic setting or arts organization; have some teaching experience at the college/undergraduate level; familiarity with contemporary writing culture; strong administrative, organizational and supervisory skills; budget and fundraising experience; and knowledge of social media as a marketing tool.

George Mason University, located outside of Washington, D.C., in Fairfax, Va., boasts a nationally-renowned MFA program established in 1980 and a BFA launched in 2013 that offers fiction, poetry and nonfiction concentrations.
