The George Mason University School of Systems Biology, within the College of Science, invites well-qualified candidates to apply for a Research Assistant Professor position with a concentration on Chemical Engineering.   • Perform tissue engineering and regenerative medicine science using invitro models as they relate to pathobiology and mechanism of disease;
  • Perform research to improve bioreactor design and optimization of biomaterial cell interactions as they relate to cardiovascular and pulmonary systems;
  • Study ways to differentiate human IPS cells into vascular cells and GLIA;
  • Characterize cells based on differentiation pathways;
  • Study the ability to decellularize tissue grafts;
  • Develop assays for angiogenesis and hematopoietic stem cells;
  • Set up and maintain bioreactors for the cultivation of vascular grafts; and
  • Prepare research proposals related to the duties described above.

Required Qualifications: The position requires a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. In addition, the position requires an individual who has demonstrated experience across many disciplines as described below:
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary research group;
  • Substantial research experience in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, stem cells and developmental biology, in-vitro models as they relate to pathobiology, and mechanisms of disease;
  • Experience in bioreactor design and optimization and biomaterial-cell interactions as they relate to cardiovascular and pulmonary systems is critical;
  • Experience with molecular biological techniques to include PCR, qRT-PCR, and immunoblots; differentiating human iPS cells and MSCs into vascular cells and/or GLIA; characterization of cells based on differing differentiation pathways; cell-matrix interaction; and ability to decellularize tissue grafts;
  • Hands-on experience in standing up bioreactors for the cultivation of vascular grafts and the study of vascularized systems;
  • Must have performed extensive morphometric and mechanical analyses of engineered grafts; and
  • Must meet the eligibility requirements for access to the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) facility.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • The ability to develop assays for hematopoietic stem cells, angiogenesis and anastomosis; and
  • Experience with DNA delivery protocols.

Location: A large portion of the research will be performed at the NRL in Washington, D.C. Therefore, the successful applicant must meet the eligibility requirements for access to the NRL facility.
