Project Manager for Academic Innovation and New Ventures
The George Mason University Office of the Provost invites applications for the position of Project Manager for Academic Innovation and New Ventures. George Mason University is on the move to be a leading higher education innovator in 21st century education. This includes the development of online programming and the delivery of personalized, customized education and student services to students who wish to attend Mason at our three campuses in northern Virginia, our campus in South Korea, and/or online. New Ventures is building a team of individuals that can help launch and manage new initiatives that will take the university into the future specializing in project management, strategic analysis and operations.
Responsibilities: The Project Manager reports to the Executive Director of Academic Ventures and is responsible for managing and supporting the launch of new university-wide projects and initiatives that innovate the delivery of educational services. The incumbent is expected to design and manage new and transformative efforts from inception to launch through program oversight, while working with campus stakeholders and key external partners to promote and ensure operational success. This position will work closely with administrative units such Information Technology Services, Mason Learning Solutions, Enrollment Management, Academic Units, the Office of Digital Learning, the Budget Office, and partner universities and companies. Duties include: * Work with academic leadership, Budget Office personnel, instructional designers, Information Technology Services staff, enrollment service managers, and external strategic business partners to launch, plan, develop, and deliver Academic Innovation and New Ventures projects; * Ensure a focus on student success and establish a clear value proposition for the university for new initiatives; * Ensure that all appropriate project management standards are met from project inception to completion; * Maintain high standards for project quality control and customer service on all programs and projects; * Ensure and implement sound project business plans; funding opportunities are identified; statements of work are current, accurate and followed; timelines are defined and deadlines are met; and key performance indicators (KPIs) are identified and used; * Maintain consistent and accurate status information, data, documentation, and an audit trail for each project; and implement and use a standard communication protocol for keeping university leadership and stakeholders informed of progress; * Identify opportunities and risks, and develop contingency plans to mitigate potential risks or critical path delays; * Incorporate opportunity and risk information into the communication protocol; * Assist with proposal writing as appropriate; and * Implement a continuous improvement program for project management by incorporating best practices in “postmortem” review, project delivery assessment, root cause analysis, etc.; and incorporate changes as appropriate.
Required Qualifications: * Advanced degree such as an M.B.A., or an equivalent combination of education and experience; * Demonstrated experience in project, program, or product management experience in a business and/or higher education environment; * Demonstrated experience in two or more of the following: client development, staff development, customer relations, process design, innovation management, and/or change management; * Excellent written and verbal communication skills; * Excellent analytical skills; * Excellent skills in establishing priorities and managing resources; * Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills; * Ability to work with a diverse population of faculty and staff; * Proven ability to self-motivate in team-oriented, high-pressure environment; and * Passion to innovate, solve problems, and meet the challenges and opportunities of higher education.
Preferred Qualifications: * Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification; * Experience managing multiple successful strategic external partnerships; and * Work experience that involves higher education and or technology.
