Graphics Designer / Production Editor
The Arms Control Association (ACA), founded in 1971, is a national nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to promoting public understanding of and support for effective arms control policies. The monthly magazine, Arms Control Today (ACT), is published 10 times a year and is available digitally, in print, and on the Arms Control App. ACT is a two-color magazine (black with rotating spot color) with a four-color cover. An issue typically runs about 40 pages. Considered the authoritative voice in its field, ACT is ready by policymakers, educators, policy specialists, reporters, and the interested public.
The design and production editor reports to the editor in chief. He/she is primarily responsible for layout, online publishing, advertising, and editorial assistance. The selected candidate will work closely with all members of the magazine’s staff to plan and publish ACT as well as ad campaigns and ACA reports. Salary range is $50-$60k depending on experience. Benefits include employer-provided health coverage, contribution to individual retirement account (after one year), paid vacation and sick leave.
Production and Layout
The position includes executing desktop layout of the magazine, including selecting photos, producing graphs and charts, producing initial galleys, managing changes to galleys, working with clients on ad copy, and coordinating with the printer.
The design and production editor is responsible for uploading ACT on ACA’s website and on the Arms Control App, and maintaining other relevant sections of the organization’s website in coordination with designated staff. He/she also will work with the communications and marketing team to help promote and increase the organization’s brand across both print and digital mediums, including social media and the Arms Control App.
He/she is responsible for developing and maintaining advertising exchanges with other publications, creating and typesetting ads for ACT, and designing and coordinating production of branding and marketing materials including flyers, brochures, and online ads for ACT and ACA. The design and production editor should have strong writing skills and the ability to create copy for the general public.
The design and production editor should have at least two years of professional experience in production and layout. He/she should have extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, with particular emphasis on InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. Experience working with HTML as well as formatting photography for print and Web use is required; experience with Drupal is a plus. Strong writing and editing experience, photography skills, and knowledge of social media tools and best practices are a plus, as is familiarity with international security issues.
The candidate should be well-organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented. He/she should be comfortable working closely with colleagues and should be able to take initiatives as well as directions.
