The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is seeking a dynamic Creative Director, who will be responsible for directing and supervising production and design department’s workload; working directly with Strategic Outreach division and other staff members to develop and create effective electronic and print promotional materials for the association’s products and services; managing internal and external print production, and maintaining print vendor relationships; maintaining and regulating branding standards and design concepts to meet AIAA objectives; ensuring AIAA abides by industry standards in regards to copyright and trademark infringement; assisting with creative direction for artwork and advertising in Aerospace America magazine; and managing any freelance, or external design projects, as needed.

 

Accountability:

Supervision and Management

  • Administer Strategic Outreach division project management system in conjunction with Director of Marketing and Web Strategist to task design and production project requests
  • Supervise internal design staff on all assignments, set performance goals and conduct personnel reviews, handle administrative management functions
  • Ensure creative staff are staying abreast of design trends, and tools that could improve design and production processes
  • Manage production budgets so projects are developed and delivered at or below budgeted costs
  • Manage current and archived design files and collateral
  • Improve production and graphic design department processes and communicate processes to internal stakeholders

Internal and External Production/Creative Processes

  • Manage the direction of artwork for all internal creative projects including coordination with program and marketing managers to ensure appropriate design specifications are provided
  • Develop schedules in conjunction with marketing managers and other internal clients for timely production and delivery of promotional materials and other design products
  • Manage the routing of proofs from printers ensuring stakeholders sign-off and review proofs for accuracy of colors, text, layout, bindery, paper, quantities and delivery date
  • Monitor inventory for printed items like stationary, business cards, thank you cards, etc. and replenish as needed

 

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports to Director of Marketing

 

Position Dimensions:

  • Produce all work consistent with AIAA branding and style guide
  • Ensure projects achieve the desired results and are completed in a timely manner and within budget
  • Work with crossfunctional teams (i.e. Marketing, Communications, Publications, etc.) to assist with project and budget management
  • Minimal travel required; One to two trips per year possible

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree; Graphic design or similar focus preferred
  • Advanced training and/or on-the-job experience in digital graphic development and graphic design software.
  • Project management training specific to a creative work setting preferred

 

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Seven or more years of experience working in a professional graphic design environment
  • Five or more years of supervisory experience  
  • Extremely familiar with a variety of print and electronic design concepts, practices, and procedures, including video production and website design
  • Extremely proficient managing projects from conception to completion
  • A good eye for layout, composition, typography, color and design
  • Ability to keep track of multiple projects and be self-reliant
  • High proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat on a mac platform
  • Mid-level proficiency with Dreamweaver
  • Mid-level proficiency with MS Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Collaborative leader with ability to inspire and coach direct reports
  • Good listener with ability to accept and provide constructive feedback
  • Great positive attitude, work ethic, and the ability to show initiative
  • Exceptional interpersonal and teamwork skills

 

Additional Skills:

  • Willing to pursue continued skill training, so AIAA maintains the highest standards.
  • Solid understanding of the principles of good website design and usability concepts
