Associate Director, Fitness & Recreation - Georgetown University Law Center

The Associate Director of Fitness & Recreation assists in creating, managing and supervising collaborative campus-wide wellness initiatives, fitness programs and services at the Law Center's Sport and Fitness Center. S/he is responsible for the development and daily operation of a comprehensive, balanced, fitness and wellness programs, the management of instructors, personal trainers, and the organization of the intramural program. Reporting to the Dire Director of Operations & Risk Management, the Associate Director has duties that include but are not limited to:

Fitness Programming

  • Manages overall design, management, and implementation of comprehensive fitness programs for the students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develops fitness classes, personal training courses, and specialty programs.
  • Evaluates classes before they are offered and ensure safe exercise requirements are followed.
  • Establishes the course schedule and trains instructors in exercise programming, liability, consultation, assessment, and counseling skills.
  • Develops and organizes special events, orientations, and wellness integrations.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records for the department intramurals and small group training programs.
  • Monitors coaching, subs, refs, and services needed to accomplish fitness goals.
  • Serves as point of contact for intermural, fitness, and wellness questions.
  • Assists in developing and implementing fitness policies, procedures, and protocol, and long-range plans.
  • Markets and promotes Fitness and Wellness programming.
  • Oversees implementation and execution of START SAFE Orientation program for new members providing guidance with equipment, basic elements of fitness and weight training and nautilus tutorials.

Management and Administration

  • Assists in the day-to-day club management as part of the leadership team, ensuring effective club operations, cleanliness, and good staff relations.
  • Manages staff development, supervision, training, mentoring, scheduling, and operation of the Fitness staff.
  • Maintains organized personnel files of all trainers, instructors, and coaches.
  • Ensures all Nationally Accredited Certifications are in compliance with Continuing Education requirements.
  • Hires, coaches, evaluates, and manages the trainers, coaches, and instructors relative to their job descriptions and or programming format.
  • Creates and implements key performance indicators in areas of responsibility, maximizing space and attendance, using innovative and proactive management strategies to ensure maximum occupancy and enrollment in Small Group Training and Intramural programs.
  • Monitors and measures inventory of equipment and related expenses for the Fitness division.
  • Maintains and ensures that the entire equipment inventory and necessities for Fitness floor are properly maintained and in good condition.
  • Partners in creating and monitoring budgets, and addresses fluctuations.

Risk Management

  • Conducts a daily fitness floor checks and reports fitness deficiencies or needs.
  • Implements Fitness Center policies/procedures by following industry standards and ensures the safety of gym participants.
  • Maintains and ensures that the inventory of safety/security equipment, first aid, staff uniforms, and Fitness Center supplies are ordered and properly maintained.
  • Anticipates preventive maintenance and proactively assess equipment functionality.

Personal Training

  • Nurtures, motivates, and encourages performance from clientele.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed client records to assess performance and progress.
  • Documents and reports incidents and health concerns to the Director.
  • Teaches one program per semester and two Group Exercise class per week.
  • Provides Fitness Desk coverage for intramural sports sessions for Basketball, Volleyball, Kickball, and or Soccer.
  • Coaches and oversees one Intramural programs.
  • Teaches personal training sessions and small group instruction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Sports Management or related field
  • Progressive experience in fitness, recreation, and wellness and leadership
  • Experience in the successful implementation and evaluation of high quality fitness programs, supervising evaluating fitness program staff, and developing schedules
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current fitness standards and trends, programming and popular college intramurals, and group exercise programming with abilities to work with diverse individuals
  • NCCA accredited Personal Training AND Group Fitness Certifications. (ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA).
  • At least one specialty certification (Les Mills, USAW, CSCS, RYT, ACE Specialty Certificate).
  • CPR/ AED and First Aid certifications (American Red Cross or American Heart Association)
  • Must have personal liability policy for Group Exercise and provide a copy of your current Certificate of Insurance in order to instruct

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in Physical Education, Health, Recreation, or related field
  • Current Secondary Group Exercise Certification in one of the following approved programs in order to instruct:
    • Les Mill's Body Pump, Body Combat, Body Attack, Body Step, Body Jam, RPM, Sprint, GRIT, Body Flow and or Sh'Bam
    • Beachbody's Insanity, Cize, Core De Force, Turbo Kick, Piyo and or Country Heat
    • Freedom Exercise Group's BANG! Power Dance and or Freedom Barre
    • Pilates: Balanced Body and or Power Pilates
    • Zumba branded formats with current, active ZIN account
    • Cycling: Mad Dogg, Kaiser, Schwinn, Reebok and or Johnny G Spinning
    • Yoga: 200/500 Yoga RYT with Yoga Alliance and or Yoga Fit
    • Aquatics: AEA, American Arthritis Foundation, US Water Fitness Association, Wet Yet Water Fitness, Aqua Zumba, Aquatic Therapy and Rehabilitation Institute and or Water In Motion
