Associate Director of Aquatics, Sport and Fitness Center - Georgetown University Law Center

The Associate Director of Aquatics manages the maintenance, programming, and scheduling of the Scott K. Ginsburg Sport and Fitness Center.  S/he, working collaboratively with managers regarding the use of the pool, coordinates instructional programs for swimming, and provides other services as requested; manages of all swim staff risk management protocols for the swimming pool; and teaches Red Cross Certification classes for the Law Center Community. Reporting to the Director of Operations and Risk Management, the Associate Director has duties that include but are not limited to:


  • Manages all pool maintenance, scheduling, and programming (including lifeguard training, SCUBA, swim lessons, aquatic rehab, aqua aerobics, and club sport practice).
  • Serves as the contact for the pool's maintenance subcontractor, and manages all preventive maintenance with subcontractors, including scheduling and pool chemical orders/deliveries.
  • Provides constant supervision, operations and maintenance of pools and spas (including filters, UV filtration system, pumps, and pH and chemicals and the like for the spas in the ladies and men's locker rooms).
  • Monitors and measures inventory of equipment and related expenses for the Aquatics and Programming Division
  • Maintains and ensures that the entire equipment inventory and necessities, to include swim instruction and programming equipment, are properly maintained, stored, and in good condition.
  • Covers lifeguard shifts and provides swim lessons.
  • Actively participates and/coaches one Supplemental Aquatic Program per semester.
  • Provides exceptional customer service at all times, handling customer complaints and requests in a timely, responsible manner.
  • Assists in developing strategies for marketing services with Director of Operations and Risk Management.

Management and Administration

  • Manages staff development, supervision, training, mentoring, scheduling, and complete operations of the Aquatics Program.
  • Interviews hires; coaches and evaluates lifeguards, swim coaches and program instructors; and assures that all staff members maintain current, required continuing education and certifications.
  • Creates and implements key performance Indicators in areas of responsibility, and addresses fluctuations and performance vs budgeted figures.
  • Partners in creating budgets, prepares financial statements and reports, and addresses any fluctuations in performance vs allocated budget figures and projections.
  • Assists the Management Team's implementation of fun, safe, and current Intramural and Small Group programming for the Law Center Community.
  • Assists with the general management of the Fitness Center, and is available for other duties/projects as may from time to time be directed by the Director of Operations.

Risk Management

  • Formulates and distributes the Fitness Center risk management protocols.
  • Work with DEMOC to assure that the Fitness Center is in compliance with University policies.
  • Trains staff and coordinates drills.
  • Conducts daily pump room, pool and whirlpool walk through daily, and reports back to the Director of Operations and Risk Management any deficiencies and/or needs.
  • Maintains and ensures that the inventory of safety/security equipment, first aid, staff uniforms, and pool supplies are ordered and properly maintained.


  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years of experience as Aquatics Director and Swim Coach.
  • Current Lifeguard certification
  • CPR certification
  • Pool Operator's License (Ellis & Associates International Aquatic Safety certifications acceptable)
  • Ability to lift at least 45 pounds, stand long hours, and move heavy equipment
  • Willingness and availability to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends

Preferred qualification

American Red Cross or equivalent
