Senior Desktop Engineer
LCG is seeking a Senior Systems/Desktop Engineer to be a key member of our team supporting 2500 users base environment. The work location is in Rockville, MD near the Twinbrook Metro station. The person filling the position will provide comprehensive patching, release, and operations support for enterprise systems using LANDesk and IBM BigFix as well as desktop engineering. Strong technical experience in providing technical solutions and support to hardware, software and operating systems in an inter-networked environment is required. Primary Responsibilities: Provide systems engineering and architecture support to ongoing infrastructure operations and projects to maintain highly efficient networks of shared computing resources and data. Manage the BigFix service. Includes patching and software release distributions to workstations and potentially servers using IBM BigFix; includes creating and testing packages prior to release. Assess vulnerability & patch information from compliance scans for Microsoft Windows (any release) and determine application and production impacts. Experience with Apple OS and xNIX is a positive. Provides remediation services to infrastructure teams based on vulnerability & policy compliance scans. Actively participates in project activities, strategic and tactical Patch and Configuration Management model development, and improvement of procedures and standards Assists in proactively developing patch and vulnerability management procedures and processes within the operations team and in conjunction with business and IT partners. Identify and assess security deficiencies and provide recommendation regarding remediation. Ensure patch configuration is up to date ensuring compliance. Utilize tools to automate patch deployment, such as IBM BigFix. Responsible for patching assets in test and production environments while ensuring quality. Participate in Change Advisory Board and technical review meetings to discuss patching, vulnerability impacts and considerations. Negotiate, plan and manage patch activities. Deploy approved release packages and break-fix solutions in accordance with all enterprise architecture and configuration, change, and release management policies and procedures. Develop and maintain small software tools and custom scripts, using PowerShell, Visual Basic, and Wise, to automate repetitive tasks and improve user access to self-service options. Troubleshoot and resolve issues as required, and propose and implement changes aimed at continuous improvement. Play a key role in defining hardware standards, engineering and securing the standard desktop platform, implementation of policies and procedures to ensure consistency with customer goals, industry best practices and regulatory requirements. Play a key role in developing the overall design and implementation of customer's desktop environment and software distribution infrastructure. Provide recommendations on potential security, speed and/or system enhancements for the desktop environment. Create and maintain base images for desktop and laptop computers including the automated portion of the overall imaging process. Draft user communication and issue email notifications to key stakeholders and the user community regarding environment changes, patches, and outages, both planned and unplanned. Break down, set up, and transport IT equipment during moves within and between government-owned or leased data centers and offices for relocation and/or surplus activities. Works with vendor support contacts to resolve technical issues within the desktop environment. Provide Tier III engineering support of the current desktop platforms as items are escalated from Tier II for subject matter expert consultation. Maintains IT records and tracking for area of responsibility.
