Position Description Summary: The Regional Superintendent has managerial oversight of the build functions for all projects located within the Eastern Region, and is responsible in leading all field activities to achieve gross profit plan through effective execution of the project work. This position owns final responsibility for all regional trade related work in both the field and the fabrication facilities, and leads a team of individuals that are collectively accountable for achieving estimated budgets for labor, materials, rentals and small tools within the region. In conjunction with the Operations Manager, the Regional Superintendent is accountable to maintain and improve upon the estimated bid-day gross profit dollars and percentages of all projects through leadership trade superintendents, field leadership teams, logistics, and close interaction of the detailing department. The Regional Superintendent will be responsible to go into to new markets and meet with local unions, MCA, and SMACNA associations as well as contractors in order to find the right trade partner / subcontractor. This position is a "Southland Ambassador" to trade associations and unions in order for Southland to gain acceptance in new markets. The Regional Superintendent is expected to be actively involved in Lean Construction Institute as well as contractor conferences to further develop deep relationships and contacts for current and future work. Primary Duties, Responsibilities: Overall responsibility for developing the project field leadership team - including project superintendents, foremen, quality control, and safety (working in conjunction with SI safety manager). Must maintain strong working relationship with all the local unions in the areas SI is working; this includes developing rapport with leadership of each area's unions. Assist superintendents with any union job difficulties on project sites. Keep current with all union contract changes and work with management to resolve any issues that cannot be solved at the Jobsite Superintendent level. Negotiate favorable trade concession and project agreements for specific targeted projects during the procurement phase and beyond. Works with division leadership on identifying, interviewing, and selecting potential regional trade partners / subcontractors in new geographic areas. Lead the recruiting, training and mentoring efforts at the field level for all personnel with in the division and to build a pipeline with qualified candidates to achieve our workforce plan. Leads and participates in project planning processes, researching and implementing new field technologies, and ensuring all projects are utilizing prefabrication strategies to their fullest extent. Serves as a coach to trade partners / subcontractors and works with them on developing and implementing standard procedures for pull planning, manpower management, prefabrication strategies, quality control processes, and safety policies. Clearly communicates SI's safety policy on each project, and works with trade partners / subcontractors on ensuring their safety program aligns with SI's. Works with project team on development of project specific material standards, means, and methods. Utilizes lean planning efforts and ensures these are put in place to plan the project, measure the work, develop look-ahead schedules, track PPC's, etc. Actively participate in developing "Must Win" strategies for project pursuits; this includes estimate reviews, fabrication strategies, labor productivity rates, crew ratios, constructability plans, and field execution planning. Work closely with other division Superintendents and Construction Managers to learn best practices, (includes expertise and means/methods) and to assure all company field personnel are used effectively across all divisions. This also includes close peer to peer relationships. Monitors daily reports and helps the project manager in assuring the project foreman's job site documentation is up to date, accurate, and useful. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Represent themselves with SI's Core Values always as the baseline of decision making. Excellent knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction of the MEP industry, along with general building knowledge. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources Complex Problem Solving - Identifies complex problems and reviews related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Communication - Good interpersonal communications with field work force, project managers, internal support groups, general contractors, other trade subcontractors and vendors. Accountability - accountable to themselves and the team, and ability to hold others accountable, for meeting agreed upon labor, material, safety, and quality goals. Education / Experience: Successful completion of industry specific education. Computer literate, capable of operating MS Word, MS Excel and MS Project. BS or BA degree - Engineering or Construction management along with continuing education in the areas of management and business are preferred. Continuing education in the areas of construction, management and business are preferred for this position. 10+ years in trade management and managing profitable projects with a proven ability to improve project margin. Other Accountabilities/Activities/Abilities: Actively participate as a member of the National Division's leadership team. Ability to travel to remote jobsites to meet with project teams, provide leadership oversight, and ensure all processes and policies of the project team are being successfully implemented. Travel could be as much as 2-3 times per month. Maintain effective business relationships with peers - Teamwork and collaboration is mandatory. Active participate in Lean implementation, policy development and training. Demonstrate and display honesty, integrity and personal accountability. Develop strong business relationships and hold direct reports and peers in our organization personally accountable for their duties and responsibilities. Desire to continually learn, ask questions, and share lessons learned.
