Refer Save Apply Job ID: MMK-26375 Description: The Director of Risk Management has broad responsibility for the protection of the institution and its staff from fortuitous loss. The Director has the authority and responsibility to administer the Clinical Risk Program. The Director of Risk Management advises and consults with senior leadership and the Board on potential sources of loss and makes decisions on how to eliminate or minimize loss. This position works in close cooperation with system associates to respond to identified needs for development of policies, processes or systems related to risk control and risk prevention or response to statute, regulation or system policy. The Director of Risk Management is responsible for the risk management program's day-to-day operations included in this job description. The Director is the facility Patient Safety officer and is responsible for the implementation and oversight of the Patient Safety Plan. This position reviews, formulates and implements policy and organizational changes, working with general programmatic authority delegated by Anne Arundel Health Systems senior leadership. Coordinates, advises and facilitates risk-financing strategy with the CFO and his/her designee on issues that could financially put the organization at risk. Coordinate all patient safety activities with other clinical loss control, quality management, performance improvement, and infection control initiatives. Plan and implement an institution-wide program of clinical and non-clinical loss control, including a comprehensive orientation program. Offer assistance to the organization's General Counsel with those legal, regulatory issues that can affect the organization from a patient safety, public relations, marketing, and risk-financing standpoint. Work with the human resource executive to identify, analyze, and manage through risk control and risk financing techniques those risks related to the workforce. Advises senior leadership on mitigation strategies for risk on Strategic Planning and Marketing. Actively participate on the Claims and Risk Management Committees and be a permanent member on the following committees: Executive Quality Council Patient Safety Committee Emergency Management Committee Environment of Care Committee Hospital Policy Review Committee Research, write, implement departmental, facility policies, and procedures that affect liability exposures and assist in regulatory compliance. Assist clinical leadership in the design of risk management program specific to their department and unique risk. Conduct systems analyses to uncover and identify patterns that could result in compensable events. Acts as the organizations' Patient Safety Officer and develop, implement and monitor the Patient Safety Plan. Identifies and makes recommendations to correct clinical and other work practices and environmental conditions, which present exposure to liability. Lead investigations pertaining to occurrence reporting within AAHS entities, monitor personnel occurrence reports for issues which may have an impact on patients or visitors and/or which may expose the system to liability. Develop, implement and manage an information system, which collects, centralizes and communicates information appropriately, protecting the validity and integrity of risk management data. Develop various periodic reports and statistics for system leadership, Boards of Trustees, Medical Staff and as requested by hospital senior leadership. Identifies trends patterns of occurrences and communicate same to appropriate medical staff, Medical Center and AAHS entities and system personnel. Manages the system's professional and general liability program in conjunction with contracted entities. Maintains accurate confidential files of actual and potential liability claims. Coordinates with contracted entities the claims investigation and legal defense, working through and in cooperation with the system's professional and general liability insurance carrier and assigned attorneys. Develops reports on professional and general liability suits and claims for the Board of Trustees as required. In cooperation with the Claims and the Board of Trustees Risk Management Committees, approves settlement of all claims against the facility within broad guidelines established by the CEO, CFO, and/or governing body. Required: Minimum of five years of progressive experience in healthcare management/ leadership with specific experience in clinical risk management/patient safety. Must possess knowledge of regulatory and legal requirements. Knowledge of clinical and non-clinical loss control and claims administration. Experience must include negotiation of settlements and projection of financial reserves. Requires strong interpersonal skills to facilitate daily interactions with patients, family, administration, ancillary staff, nursing, physicians, attorneys and personnel from outside organizations. Strong leadership abilities. Effective presentation skills. Excellent communication skills; articulate, persuasive, and eloquent communicator both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated skills in strategic planning, implementing and evaluating programs. Preferred: Graduate degree in Nursing or healthcare related field or Juris Doctor with a minimum of three years of experience as an attorney. Current license to practice law in the State of Maryland. Current certification in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).
