Job Type: Full-Time Location: Lubber Run - 300 N. Park Drive, Arlington, Virginia       Arlington County has an exciting opportunity in the Department of Parks and Recreation's Early Childhood Program (ECP) for an experienced and organized early childhood education professional to fill a key role as a recreation programmer. The ECP serves children (ages 1-5) in various stages of development and physical ability through its Creative Preschooler Program, Cooperative Playgroups and Summer Camps dispersed throughout six locations in Arlington County. 

This position provides support to the Early Childhood Program through customer service, activity planning, and procurement of supplies and vendors.  Working directly with program leaders, the Programmer will enhance cohesion throughout early childhood programs. 

Duties include:
  • Developing and implementing programs which focus on physical development, cognitive skills, social skills, fitness, nutrition, creative expression, environmentally friendly practices, and developmental assets;
  • Collaborating with the other work units within the department to plan recreation events;
  • Ensuring compliance of policies and procedures outlined in the Virginia Department of Social Services and Arlington County for Child Day Care licensed programs; 
  • Designing, distributing, and managing marketing materials including flyers, brochures and the monthly early childhood newsletter and uses social media to communicate marketing material; and
  • Coordinating purchases and purchase orders for supplies and vendors; and
  • Supervising staff and placement of substitutes in year-round and summer camp positions.
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of analytical problem solving skills, flexibility to work in varying and ever-changing conditions, and strong interpersonal communication skills to work with community and parent groups.
 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Recreation or Early Childhood Education or a related field PLUS one year of experience as a teacher, teaching assistant in a preschool/day-care, leisure, or school environment.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with additional training, experience, or certifications in one or more of the following:
  • Training staff on early childhood development trends;
  • Working with individuals with disabilities in a culturally diverse population;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with parent groups or community organizations;
  • Child Day Care licensing regulations as required by the Virginia Department of Social Services and Arlington County;
  • Possession of a current Medication Administration Training (MAT) or Medication Administration Training-Diabetes (MAT-D) certification; and/or
  • Active Notary Public.

 Special Requirements: A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

The selected candidate must provide negative tuberculosis (TB) results or submit to a TB screening prior to starting work.

CPR and First Aid Certification must be obtained within the first six months of employment. 
 Additional Information: Work hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends, required bi-monthly team meetings, and a mandatory 16 hours of training per year.

The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
