Manager - Research Center
The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine work together as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conduct other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions. The National Academies also encourage education and research, recognize outstanding contributions to knowledge, and increase public understanding in matters of science, engineering, and medicine.
Information and Technology Services (ITS) provides information technology and service solutions to staff, study volunteers, and Academy members allowing the National Academies to deliver the most efficient and the highest-quality products to external customers.
The Research Center enhances the National Academies project lifecycle productivity through our expertise and portfolio of services; We work as a trusted partner with staff to develop project proposals, identify new business opportunities and track impact data for analysis and reporting.; Teach staff the appropriate research skills to successfully execute all stages of the project lifecycle and effectively accomplish the Academies mission; Develop and invest in staff expertise to focus on strategic priorities and new ways of working in order to unify the efforts of the institution and meet the needs of the institution's sponsors; Provide access to authoritative collections and information services that are central to the success of the institution, including high quality peer-reviewed science, medical and engineering resources.
The Manager of the Research Center manages library and information services including reference, computer searches, circulation, and research activities. Develops department goals, objectives, budgets, standards of performance, and library procedures. Prepares, updates, and publishes library brochures and handouts. Directs the selection and purchase of all library materials. Participates in unit strategic and operational planning. Incumbent independently performs work directly related to the management of research, library, and information services. Assignments are broadly defined and require in-depth professional level knowledge, judgment, and creativity to complete. Has authority to establish processes and procedures for assigned areas of responsibility to ensure the effective and efficient operation of functions. Plans, reviews, and coordinates the work of assigned staff, with full supervisory responsibilities for exempt and/or nonexempt staff.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of information research in the digital age. Ability to solve problems of substantial variety and complexity. Ability to undertake tasks broad in nature, requiring ingenuity, and originality and serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues. Ability to operate independently, and exercise latitude for independent judgment, discretion, and action. Ability to train and develop staff. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.
