The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine work together as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conduct other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions. The National Academies also encourage education and research, recognize outstanding contributions to knowledge, and increase public understanding in matters of science, engineering, and medicine.


Information and Technology Services (ITS) provides information technology and service solutions to staff, study volunteer, and Academy members allowing the National Academies to deliver the most efficient and the highest quality products to external customers.


The Research Center enhances the National Academies project lifecycle productivity through our expertise and portfolio of services; We work as a trusted partner with staff to develop project proposals, identify new business opportunities and track impact data for analysis and reporting.; Teach staff the appropriate research skills to successfully execute all stages of the project lifecycle and effectively accomplish the Academies mission; Develop and invest in staff expertise to focus on strategic priorities and new ways of working in order to unify the efforts of the institution and meet the needs of the institution's sponsors; Provide access to authoritative collections and information services that are central to the success of the institution, including high quality peer-reviewed science, medical and engineering resources.




The Senior Librarian plans and conducts highly complex research and analysis. Incumbent works with high degree of independence and autonomy. Conducts advanced research, develops research methodologies, executes and analyzes research strategies. Applies advanced, professional and functional knowledge to problem solving, includes the identification and analysis of complex variables in research methods and scientific research sources. Incumbent performs work that is predominately intellectual and analytical in character, requiring the consistent exercise of discretion and independent judgment to solve a full range of complex problems. Assignments are both broadly and narrowly defined and require the understanding, selection and application of specialized data sources.


Performs specialized research assessments, interprets and articulates research strategies and methodologies. Analyzes and prepares research reports that require judgment and creativity to complete and deliver. May supervise or serve in a lead capacity.





Ability to exercise leadership skills and think independently and critically. Ability to exercise independent judgment and skill in planning, coordinating, and implementing several diverse projects simultaneously. Ability to provide innovative and effective library instruction. Ability to apply understanding of customer needs and exercise independent evaluation of content to deliver high-quality information products and services. Ability to discuss extensive subject related matters and provide hands-on demonstrations, tutorials, or other training for a diverse special library clientele. Expert knowledge of a wide range of multidisciplinary print and computer-based information resources. Knowledge of interpretative reference interviewing techniques. Ability to solve intellectual problems of appreciable variety and complexity. Ability to undertake tasks broad in nature, requiring ingenuity and originality, and serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.
