General Maintenance Mechanic (Two Positions)
Is this position exempt from overtime pay?
Performs semi-skilled and skilled general maintenance tasks within school facilities. This position entails responsibility for performing a variety of repairs and installations that include, but are not limited to, rough and finish carpentry, roofing, glazing, doors, window hardware, flooring finishes, block and brick laying, concrete patching, bleachers, and lockers, etc. The position is considered essential personnel for emergency situations, including inclement weather conditions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?
1. Replaces single and thermal panes in various types of windows, doors, and showcases.
2. Cuts, fits, and joins lumber and plastic laminate in the construction and repair of cabinetry, book cases, and countertops.
3. Performs sizing, mortising, boring, fitting, and hanging wood door blanks; sizing, ordering, and hanging metal doors.
4. Evaluates, installs, and repairs various types of roofing materials, flashing, exterior trim, soffit, rain gutters, and down spouts. Cleans roof drains.
5. Installs and repairs specialty items that include but are not limited to, chalkboards, bulletin boards, smart boards, bleachers (exterior, interior), lockers, toilet partitions, overhead doors, folding partitioning, etc.
6. Installs and repairs all types of door and window hardware.
7. Installs and repairs floor finishes.
8. Installs and repairs metal framed drywall partitions.
9. Installs and repairs window sashes/jambs, doors/jambs, cabinets, stair treads, and hand rails.
10. Repairs and replaces T&G ceiling tile, suspended ceiling tile, and grid.
11. Repairs and replaces masonry block, brick, and concrete.
12. Uses various shop and hand power tools that include, but are not limited to, table saw, band saw, radial arm saw, panel saw, joiner, planer, drill press, circular and reciprocating saws, hammer drill, and stick and mig welding machines, etc.
13. Works various shifts, scheduled overtime and respond to emergencies to effect repairs outside of normal working hours and holidays as needed.
14. Provides own standard hand tools.
15. Provides own transportation as needed.
16. Perform other related duties as assigned

· High School Diploma or GED certificate.
· Three years of general maintenance experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Practical knowledge of basic construction methods, procedures, and associated hand tools and equipment.
· Basic carpentry knowledge and experience to include layout, framing, and sheathing.
· Ability to work independently and accomplish duties within various trades in a timely manner.
· Ability to learn the content of and skill in reading, interpreting and applying work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, drawings and specifications, and manufacturers manuals.
· Ability to practice and enforce safety regulations applicable to work performed.
· Some knowledge of procedures and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials.
· Strong interpersonal skills.
· Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
· Ability to employ business technology tools as required of all AACPS employees, e.g. E-mail, obtaining relevant AACPS employee information through the AACPS Intranet, employing the electronic benefits enrollment tool and any other electronic tools implemented in the future.
· Welding experience preferred.
· Satisfactory score on any tests required.
· Possession of a valid Maryland Class (C) driver's license and proof of a good driving record.
Career Ladder Requirements
Eligibility for Consideration for Advancement from Grade 8 to Grade 10 requires:
· Two years of experience at the grade 8 level for a total of five years of progressive general maintenance experience.
· Completion of practical maintenance trades/vocational training/education approved by supervisor.
· Intermediate knowledge of and ability to perform multiple trades' skill (i.e. carpentry, drywall and other minor construction and repair tasks) at an intermediate level.
· Mastery of all duties and responsibilities of the position.
· Consistent maintenance of an effective and orderly work environment.
· Achievement of identified goals as they relate to the needs of the district and as specified by the supervisor.
· Consistent compliance with general office procedures such as standards contained in the AACPS Employee Handbook; demonstration of discretion and excellent customer service; regular and punctual attendance; and building dress code, including wearing AACPS ID badge.
· Exceeds Standards on the previous two performance evaluations.
· Recommendation of the Supervisor.
· Strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, to work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, to lift and carry a minimum of eighty (80) pounds, to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling, and kneeling, and to work in cramped interior spaces in the course of completing daily work assignments.
· Involves sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, noise, chemical solutions/solvents/odors, and adverse weather conditions.
· The employee is required to use safety devices and protective equipment in order to minimize the frequency and severity of work-related accidents. Adheres to safe practices and methods in the operation of equipment and supplies related to his/her particular job.
· The employee is responsible for correcting and/or reporting any conditions within an AACPS building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees, students, or staff members assigned to the building.
