Graphic Designer, Strategic Communications - Office of Public Affairs

Georgetown University's Office of Strategic Communications, a division of the Office of Public Affairs, represents and promotes the university and its faculty, students, programs and policies to a variety of internal and external constituents. The office provides strategic communications consultation, media relations efforts and strategic Web communications on behalf of Georgetown University, its faculty, administrators, academic programs and staff, and coordinates activities to promote Georgetown officials and expertise to internal and external constituencies.

The Graphic Designer is the lead designer to apply the creative strategy identified by the Office of Strategic Communications and visual brand of the university to projects for internal clients across the university.  S/he is part of the Creative Services function that includes issues management, internal communications, media relations, editorial content and social media and digital engagement functions.  The Graphic Designer offers design services to internal university clients in a fee-for-service model while also providing design capacity to the Office of Strategic Communications - in work ranging from large, multistep publishing projects to smaller, visually compelling communications projects designed for digital use.  Reporting to the Senior Director of Digital Engagement and Social Media, the Graphic Designer has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Develops first-rate creative work that enhances the University's strategic communications efforts and meets the goals of both internal and external university audiences.
  • Interprets clients' needs and goals and produce effective materials consistent with the university's image and brand.
  • Helps to develop creative briefs, incorporates partner/client insights into distinct concepts and strategic designs that map back to briefs, and creates visually stunning designs aligned with partner/client needs and Georgetown's visual identity.
  • Collaborates with other creative professionals, including photographers, editors, and freelancers to complete each job - with varied deliverables that include print and electronic formats.
  • Coordinates design efforts with digital strategies, event planning, and other cross-functional priorities.
  • Coaches and mentors other staff on small design projects like photo editing, creating slides, and basic digital properties.


  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or related field
  • 2 years of experience working in graphic design
  • Very strong graphic design ability: skills in typography, illustration, composition and color theory
  • Experience designing for print, for the web, and for presentations
  • Strong information design skills, including the creation of infographics or related translation of complex research into visual simplification
  • Ability to create innovative designs that build upon an established brand style
  • Expert-level skills with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Strong problem solving, relationship building and conceptual skills
  • Ability to see big picture while paying impeccable attention to detail
  • A team player and professional with deadline orientation
  • Mac OS X expertise
  • Experience with Professional software for print and digital, including Adobe Creative Suite
  • Preference for video, animation, and motion graphics experience
