Senior Prospect Analyst

The George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School invites applications for a Senior Prospect Analyst. Responsibilities: The Senior Prospect Research Analyst serves as the principal Law School authority on prospect research, wealth analysis, wealth trends, gift rating and prospect assignment. This individual actively participates in the planning, prospect coordination and implementation of the Law School’s campaign, and manages the Law School-wide prospect management and tracking system in coordination with the Office of Advancement/GMU Foundation as it relates to Law School donors, faculty, staff, students, alumni, volunteers and friends. The incumbent has overall responsibility for major and principal gift prospect identification and prospect research in support of the Law School-wide fundraising goals and objectives and will play a key role in the upcoming comprehensive campaign.

This individual is an integral member of the Law School’s Advancement and Alumni Relations team. The Senior Prospect Analyst is responsible for identifying, researching, assigning, and analyzing prospects for major gift cultivation and solicitation. This research and analysis serves as the foundation of a fundraising campaign and directly contributes to the campaign’s success. Using a customer relationship model (CRM) and the university’s alumni/development database, the incumbent manages several prospecting/research initiatives, participating and consulting directly with Law School administrators, fundraising leaders, alumni, volunteers, and executives to identify and pre-qualify major and principal gift donor prospects who have the propensity and capacity to support Law School-wide initiatives for the capital campaign. This specialized research and analysis facilitates the cultivation and solicitation of top prospects by the Dean, Associate Dean, Campaign Director, Major Gifts Officer, members of the Campaign Committee and campaign volunteers.

Major Gift Prospect Identification: * Proactively and independently plan and execute creative strategies to identify sources of major and principal gift prospective donors ($25,000-$1 million+), assisting in generating private support in partnership with the Law School’s fundraising team; * Use creative research techniques and electronic searching methodologies to ensure that the Law School’s campaign initiatives have sufficient viable, highly rated prospects to meet and exceed fundraising goals; and * Develop and execute strategies to ensure that newly identified prospects are prequalified, presented and assigned to appropriate Law School fundraisers in a timely manner based on performance metrics provided by the supervisor.

Prospect Research, Analysis and Writing: * Provide high-level, detailed research and analysis on individuals, corporations, and foundations using a wide variety of biographical, organizational and financial sources, including state-of-the-art online database services, Internet websites, library and government sources and other external repositories of public information; * Analyze and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, affinity, philanthropic tendencies, giving propensity and linkages to the Scalia Law School community, legal profession, University, etc.; * Evaluate research results to develop and implement further research strategies utilizing ethical intelligence-gathering techniques as accepted as “best practices” by the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) and Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE); * Research/identify potential volunteers for leadership positions, stewardship events, and campaign committees; * Compose documents (profiles, biographies, project summaries) using style, grammar and content appropriate to specific audiences; * Interpret and translate complex financial, legal and corporate language into easily comprehensible terms while adhering to university standards of discretion and confidentiality; * Extract and communicate key information to direct cultivation and solicitation strategies; and * Ensure that prospect knowledge--including ratings, interests, and linkages acquired through research--is preserved and maintained in a complex database system that is accessible to the fundraising staff so that it may be used to develop future cultivation strategies.

Reporting and Data Management Duties: * Serve as the Law School’s prospect management and tracking system coordinator, actively maintaining accurate contact reports and proposal/solicitation information on the Law School’s constituents and donors in the fundraising database; * Serve as the liaison to the Mason’ central fundraising program for prospect research, prospect management, and reporting; * Provide reports and query information as requested by team members on prospect portfolios, pipeline information, etc.; and * Work with Central Advancement on report development, prospect data updates, etc.

Consultation: * As a key member of the campaign team and liaison to Law School campaign fundraising team, collaborate and consult on matters related to prospect portfolio development, solicitation strategy formulation, and information gathering through peer screenings and volunteer referrals; * Analyze and interpret results and provide direction on the segmentation and management of large groups of prospects and donors identified through the electronic screening process; * Provide consultative services and orientation sessions on prospect research methodologies, prospect tracking functionality and policies, and resources to fundraisers, faculty and other key campus personnel involved in fundraising; and * Efficiently monitor and report on a core group of key principal gift prospects for the Dean, Associate Dean, and Campaign Director, and maintain an active awareness of the important news and events involving them.

Other Duties as Assigned: * Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, social sciences, communications or business; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; * Knowledge and expertise in using a wide range of research resources typically utilized by prospect researchers and the ability to apply those resources in an organized and purposeful manner; * Ability to work in a team environment; * Must be able to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information; * Must show demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize work, and independently manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities while meeting deadlines; * Ability to analyze and interpret complex financial disclosure documents for the purposes of wealth assessment (SEC filings, real property files, financial and legal disclosures, etc.) as it pertains to setting donor gift ratings and multi-year campaign commitments; * Knowledge of ethics statements by APRA, CASE, and other related associations; * Demonstrated experience in prospect research, development, library research or an information-related field (preferably in a higher education environment); * Demonstrated analytical skills to initiate and perform complex analyses, wealth assessments and organize information to identify and articulate--in writing or verbally--philanthropic patterns, tendencies, and relationships among individuals, corporations and foundations vis-a-vis the Law School; * Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and develop proactive prospecting methodologies to support organizational goals, including data mining, prospect identification and segmentation projects, sophisticated constituent database queries, build and generate database reports, etc.; * Strong computer skills and demonstrated background in Internet-based research; * Experience working with a relational fundraising/alumni engagement database is mandatory, preferably Advance C/S or similar, as well as the Microsoft Office suite of products (including Excel, Access, and Word), as well as the ability to download and export information between systems; * Excellent oral and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy required to function effectively among fundraisers, executive level Law School administrators, volunteers and other constituencies to bring large-scale, complex and priority projects to completion; * Must have strong project management skills and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in a demanding environment; and * General fundraising skills, including proficiency at supporting and participating in prospect management and tracking processes and staying informed of trends in the field.

Preferred Qualifications: * Master’s degree is preferred; * Direct experience and knowledge of prospect analytics, statistical forecasting, and Business Objects would be a major plus; and * Ability to recall, recognize and communicate interrelated information pertaining to Law School benefactors and prospects as appropriate in all communications, reports, and documents.
