Job Type: Full-Time Location: Water/Sewer/Streets Division - 4200 S. 28th Street, Arlington, Virginia       Join our team! Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services has multiple vacancies in the Water, Sewer and Streets (WSS) Bureau.

Areas of vacancies and general duties include:

Sewer Construction
Construction and repair of Storm Sewers and sanitary sewers; asphalt and concrete work.

Sewer Maintenance
Flushing and/or jetting (using Jetter's and Vactor's); baiting and retrievals; inspections and cleaning.

Streets Asphalt and Concrete
Concrete work including installation, repair & replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters, pads, and storm structures; and performing asphalt and concrete work including utility patches and/or potholes.

Water Distribution
General system maintenance, meter installation, and valve repair.

Water Maintenance
Hydrant repairs and service installations; Requires experience/general knowledge of water main repairs and maintenance.

All positions listed above also require:
  • Team/customer interaction (written and/or verbal)
  • Demonstrating knowledge and skills in the desired position
  • Providing technical expertise and ensuring new team members are trained
  • Working emergencies as needed (snow, water main breaks, etc.)
  • Ensuring safety precautions are taken
The ideal candidates will be dedicated and reliable individuals who can respond to emergencies as needed. This position also requires consulting with the supervisor at the start of each day to receive specific team related work instructions and sharing work related feedback at the end of each day.

Work is generally performed outdoors and in all types of weather conditions and often near moving traffic. Some work may be performed indoors depending upon the work assignment. The work environment includes exposure to draft, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting light to heavy objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
 Selection Criteria: NOTE: This recruitment may be used to fill other comparable vacancies in the Department of Environmental Services.

Minimum Qualifications:

WSS Technician II
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to learn how to operate hand and power tools, work outdoors in all types of weather, and follow basic verbal/written instructions. Typically, this is obtained through a combination of a High School Diploma or GED, and/or training related to the position. The ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License within twelve months of employment is preferred.
WSS Technician III:
A combination of education (High School Diploma or GED) and experience that demonstrates the ability to operate hand and power tools, work outdoors in all types of weather, and follow verbal/written instructions, plus at least six months of experience in construction or maintenance of water, sewer, or streets systems or related experience in one of the listed vacancy areas . Requires possession of valid class "B" or "A" commercial driver's license.
WSS Technician IV:
A combination of education (High School Diploma or GED) and experience that demonstrates the ability to operate hand and power tools, work outdoors in all types of weather, and follow verbal/written instructions, plus at least two years of WSS Technician III level or related experience in one of the listed vacancy areas . Requires possession of valid class "B" or "A" commercial driver's license with a tankers endorsement prior to employment.

Substitution: Additional experience may substitute for the education on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Possession of a valid class "B" or "A" commercial driver's license from applicant's place of residence at time of application;
  • Two years or more of experience in construction and/or maintenance of sewer, or streets systems or related area; and/or
  • Basic computer experience using Microsoft Office or related software.

 Special Requirements: 1) The applicant must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. If the applicant possesses a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

2) Some positions require possession of a valid class "B" or "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of hire.  Other positions may require a valid CDL within a specified timeframe normally not to exceed one year from hire date.

3) Applicants must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employers information required by Department of Transportation (DOT) agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information.

4) Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.

5) Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.

Safety
Requires learning and following all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which includes attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe working environment and to ensure team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: Normal work hours for these vacancies are 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, the work schedule is subject to change based on departmental needs.  All positions require availability for call-back in emergency situations.

Salary ranges:
WSS Technician II: $15.12-$23.09/hourly
WSS Technician III: $16.88-$25.79/hourly.
WSS Technician IV: $18.57-$28.38/hourly.
