Job Title: SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD I Closing Date/Time: Thu. 12/28/17 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $14.98 - $22.91 Hourly
Job Type: Part-Time Location: Throughout Arlington County at school crossings. May work at other sites during special events., Virginia       The successful employee will work at various Arlington County School crossings, providing vehicular and pedestrian traffic control to promote maximum safety in the movement of children to and from schools. Arlington County Schools serve a diverse population including parents and children for whom English is a second language. The work is normally limited to those hours during which school is opening, recessing or closing, but may be changed at short notice due to bad weather or other emergencies.
The employee's specific duties include:
  • Direct traffic at school crossings;
  • Report traffic hazards and violations;
  • Perform pedestrian and vehicle counts at crossings; and
  • Prepare written and/or numerical reports.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to be at school crossings promptly either with personal or public transportation. Must be accessible during school hours by telephone in order to respond to emergency schedule changes. Ability to exercise mature and alert judgment. Ability to direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Ability to deal firmly and courteously with the public, particularly school age children. Ability and willingness to work in all types of weather.
Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with school crossing guard experience and/or public contact experience.
 Special Requirements: A pre-employment background investigation, polygraph examination and physical examination are required as a condition of employment.

The applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to get to school work sites when performing assignments or the applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
 Additional Information: WORK HOURS: 12.5 hours per week. Employees are eligible for pro-rated County benefits including sick/annual/vacation leave and retirement. Employees work during the opening (morning) and closing (afternoon) of school each day. The exact hours will be determined by the needs and schedule of the particular school to which the guard is assigned. Schedule may change at very short notice due to inclement weather or other emergencies and employees must be available on short notice for such situations. Some employees also work during summer school. Some weekend and/or holiday work may be available and/or required for additional hours for special events such as parades, marathons, fairs, etc.

Supervision/direction is received from a School Crossing Guard II or from the School Crossing Guard Supervisor. Uniforms and equipment will be furnished by the County. Some employees may be asked to drive a County vehicle to provide assistance to others during special events.
