Research Associate, Department of Biology (Term position) - Georgetown College

Founded in 1789 as the nation's first Catholic institution of higher learning, Georgetown College is committed to the Jesuit traditions of an integrated education and of productive research in the liberal arts, including fine arts, humanities, languages, sciences, and social sciences.

The Research Associate assists with management of Dr. Mann's lab and field research which includes 4 graduate students and up to 10 undergraduates, and several volunteers. This includes cleaning data for the database, uploading and accessing data, training students on data, lab tasks and various projects, scheduling meets and preparing for those meetings. The specialist digitizes, reformats, and consolidates data for undergraduate students', graduate students', and postdoctoral researchers' projects. The specialist orders supplies for the lab and assists with other logistics- such as getting research posters printed. The specialist responds to inquiries about our research and assists in interviewing potential student researchers. The specialist is also directly involved in scientific endeavors and may pursue independent research. The specialist may be involved in field research in addition to lab activities.

  • Cleans, reformats, digitizes and consolidates data
  • Checks data projects of others (that these are done correctly)
  • Uploads data to database
  • Downloads and formats data for research projects as needed
  • Manages photo identification catalogs
  • Manages of all research film
  • Manages of photo requests by various entities (press, magazines, websites
  • Manages the website for monkeymiadolphins.org and pcdolphinproject.org
  • Updates website and maintains social media accounts
  • Manages lab personnel
  • Interviews prospective students, trains students, fills out time sheets
  • Schedules meetings and checks on undergraduate progress
  • Conducts independent research -fieldwork, writing, data analysis
  • Prepares conference presentations
  • Administers manuscript publication

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and R Stat package
  • Experience with data management, databases, statistical analyses and field research
  • Preference for extensive experience with the Shark Bay Dolphin Research Project and/or Potomac-Chesapeake Dolphin Project

The Research Associate is a renewable term greater than six months position.
