The George Mason University Department of Economics is seeking a well-qualified individual to serve as a part-time (20 hours per week) Academic Advisor. Responsibilities: This position involves providing academic advising for current and prospective undergraduate students. Academic advising will involve tasks such as: * Educating students about university policies and assisting with their educational planning; * Performing administrative tasks related to students’ progression in their degree programs; * Maintaining accurate records of all interactions with students; * Promptly responding to e-mail inquiries from students, faculty, and staff; * Referring students to the appropriate support services within the department or within the university as needed; and * Attending university and college advising training workshops.

This position also involves providing administrative support for the undergraduate program as a whole. Tasks here may include: * Participating in the development, implementation, review, presentation and revision of orientations for first-year and transfer students; * Assisting in student recruitment events; * Assisting in building an academic community of undergraduates by organizing welcome events and awards ceremonies; * Assisting in maintaining and improving the department’s website content for undergraduate students; and * Assisting in maintaining the department’s listserv for undergraduate students.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; * Strong interpersonal, time management, coordination, planning, and organizational skills; * Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, e-mail, and Internet; * Demonstrated ability to utilize and learn computer programs/applications; * Ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations; * Ability to work both independently and collaboratively; and * Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: * Prior academic advising experience; and * Prior coursework in economics.
