The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine work together as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conduct other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions. The National Academies also encourage education and research, recognize outstanding contributions to knowledge, and increase public understanding in matters of science, engineering, and medicine.

 

Office of News and Public Information (ONPI) provides information to the news media and general public about the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

 

JOB SUMMARY:


The Media Assistant will be responsible for providing administrative and technical support to the news office, including answering reporters' inquiries, working closely with media officers to disseminate material to journalists, and coordinating social and digital media. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in news and communication related to public policy, especially in the fields of science, technology, and health.

 

Other duties include: assisting media officers with planning of news conferences and other media events (especially handling logistical arrangements), maintaining regular database of reporter contacts, posting news releases and other information to websites and social media, managing and collecting news clips, and performing other tasks as assigned.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor's degree in related field and one year of related experience desired.

Understanding of communications, news, public relations, and social media. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Good customer service skills. Database management and digital dissemination skills.

 

Experience with Adobe Photoshop and lnDesign is helpful.
