About the Position
This position is located in the Industry, Science and Education Branch of the Embassy of Australia. It supports the Minister-Counsellor (Industry, Science and Education) to meet the following objectives:
•Elevate Australia’s bilateral education policy (early childhood, schools, post-secondary) and university research relationships with the US and Canada, including at the government-to-government level, to share best practices and lessons learned for future policy development
•Provide strategic support for specific Australian education policy, research and innovation priorities, including specific project management of activities to enhance the bilateral relationship
•Provide advice and analysis on US and Canadian policy developments in areas of portfolio interest, including education policy (early childhood, schools, post-secondary), international research collaboration, and preparing reports and policy papers for Australian officials, and for a wider Australian audience
•Support effective visits by Australian Ministers and senior officials.
The Industry, Science and Education Branch works with other branches in the Embassy – particularly the Australian Trade Commission, Trade Branch, Agriculture, Public Affairs, Development and Congressional Liaison. Effective management of relationships both within the embassy and with external stakeholders is critical to meeting the Branch’s objectives.
The position works side by side with the Deputy Director (Industry & Science), with whom administrative duties are shared.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
•Independently monitor, research, evaluate, analyse and report on US and Canadian education, training and university research policy developments and opportunities as they affect Australian interests
•Independently manage the production of regular reports and papers for the Department of Education and Training and for a wider Australian audience
•Build and maintain a broad network of related contacts in government, peak bodies, education and training institutions, research institutions and companies; and represent the Branch, as appropriate, at meetings, conferences and seminars
•Provide policy and logistical support for the delivery of complex visit programs for Ministers, senior officials and other VIPs
•Develop budgets and jointly manage the financial accountability processes for the Branch and undertake other administrative tasks, as required
•Maintain awareness of longer term strategic outcomes for the Branch and undertake other projects at the direction of the Minister-Counsellor and respond to tasking and requests from Australia, as required
•Respond to tasking and requests from Australia, as required.

•Proven research and analytical skills, with capacity to identify key issues across a range of complex policy areas of international engagement
•Demonstrated highly developed written communication skills, including experience in complex report writing, producing work requiring little or no supervision
•Well-developed oral communication, representational and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to establish and manage complex relationships with a network of contacts and to effectively represent the Branch at public events
•Sound judgment and decision making, and very well developed planning and organisational skills, including an ability to work with independence to meet multiple objectives and competing deadlines
•Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively to meet objectives of a small team, including proven initiative, cooperation, flexibility and reliability
•Expertise and technical knowledge of policy areas relevant to education and university research.
