The School of Professional & Extended Studies (SPExS) at American University invites applications for multiple full-time, non-tenure track faculty appointments for Fall 2017. Rank will be dependent on experience and degree. The positions are one-semester appointments and will commence mid-August 2017. A' QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should hold a Ph.D., MA or the highest equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline. The position will require the instructor to teach the equivalent of three undergraduate courses. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service. Applicants should share the School's commitment to diversity and inclusion. All School of Professional & Extended Studies programs emphasize experiential learning approaches. Faculty teaching in these programs are expected to provide high quality, interactive learning experiences that extend beyond traditional classroom based teaching. A' Washington Semester Program A cents € " one faculty position US Politics and Policy Incumbent would teach experiential learning-focused seminars related to US Politics and Policy to students with junior and senior standing, arrange weekly speakers and site visits (ie, think tanks, policy makers, policy analysts, survey researchers, campaign staff), develop projects related to course content, and advise students at internships. Incumbent should have existing relationships or prior employment experience outside of academia to facilitate co-curricular learning opportunities. A' Washington Mentorship Program (DC) A cents € " two to three faculty positions Introduction to College Inquiry; Intercultural Understanding Incumbent would teach introductory-level courses to first year students. Educational background in the social sciences or humanities is preferred. There may be opportunities to teach the mentored field practicum as well. Introduction to College Inquiry introduces students from different academic fields to the essentials of scholarly research, including ethical conduct, knowledge production, and an in-depth understanding of different research methods, steps in the research process, and limitations. This is not a methods or statistics course. Intercultural Understanding seeks to encourage a better understanding of the dimensions of experience and belief that distinguishes cultures and countries from one another, and conversely, the commonalities that bind human experience together. The main objective of the course is to improve the intercultural competencies and communication skills of students, and to enhance students' abilities to think critically and creatively about today's social challenges. Every general education course is required to include explorations of national origin, race, gender, and class. The course is taught in a block period and includes field trips, participation in cultural events, and simulation exercises. A' Mentorship in England Program A cents € " one faculty position Introduction to College Inquiry; Intercultural Understanding (See above for course descriptions.) Incumbent would teach courses to first year students at Bath Spa University in Bath, England, as well as act as an on-site group leader and participate in cultural excursions. Students attend orientation at American University prior to the start of classes in England. An American University staff member will reside in country and act as an advisor. Housing is provided.
