Technical Writer Position OverviewAs Technical Writer for the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), you will be on the training team for the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS). This is an exciting time to join as we upgrade NMLS to be a more intuitive, user-friendly system. In this role, you will develop technical resources to improve the productivity of over 500,000 people who use this system. You will actively participate in the agile software development, working with internal teams and vendors to develop technical writing for all areas of the new system (including user guides, GUI text, on-page guidance/context-specific help, and other documentation)-ensuring the system is intuitive and easy for users to understand while helping to maintain a knowledge base of user guides, appendices, and supporting documentation. As our training team improves training programs and materials, we will rely on your technical writing skills and new ideas for the creation of and updates to the help documents, guides, handbooks, system text, training courses, and web pages. You will assist in all technical writing aspects of the NMLS, preparing quality training and resource materials for a variety of audiences, including state regulatory agencies, industry firms and individuals, and call center representatives, using a variety of delivery methods that include online help features, printed materials, in-person training, e-learning, and webinars. You will regularly collaborate with system business analysts, testers, and developers to enhance seamless system navigation through instructional text and timely support for system enhancements. Organization OverviewThe Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) is the nationwide organization of banking regulators from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. We support the leadership role of state banking supervisors in regulating approximately 5,400 state-chartered financial institutions and other financial services providers, including mortgage lenders. The State Regulatory Registry (SRR), a division of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, manages the NMLS operations, supports a strong state mortgage origination and banking regulatory system to ensure legitimate lending practices, provides vital consumer protections, and instills both consumer and investor confidence in the housing market. NMLS is utilized by over 500,000 industry users and the staff of 61 separate regulatory agencies. Responsibilities as the Technical Writer The NMLS Training Program includes training and resources for industry, regulatory, federal agency, SRR support, and NMLS Call Center users. In this role, you will: Develop and maintain written resources, to include page-specific help documents, process guides, and various supporting materials. Standardize and revise existing materials to incorporate appropriate style, messaging, and content updates. Maintain the NMLS Style Guide and ensure consistent use across the NMLS project. Confidently make stylistic decisions. Provide and/or review content for system text. Draft and/or review language for mass e-mail communication, web news and alerts, surveys, and system messages. Develop and/or review content for the NMLS Resource Center (SharePoint) web pages. Review content and material for self-paced eLearning courses. Support new system enhancements, providing the user perspective throughout the requirements, development, and testing phases. Provide business support for IT projects related to resources. May, on limited occasions, be asked to conduct training sessions as needed, but not as a primary responsibility. May, on limited occasions, be asked to create recorded demonstrations of system processes and functionality as needed, but not as a primary responsibility. Qualifications of the Technical Writer Bachelor's degree (in English, communications, or technical writing is a plus). Experience developing training documentation and technical resource content. Proven technical writing skills for web and/or software-based content is a plus. Experience conducting training is a plus. Must be able to travel a few times per year.
