The National Center on Institutions and Alternatives (NCIA) is currently seeking a Special Education Teacher to teach Spanish, Art, Health, and Phyiscal Education to educationally, emotionally, behaviorally and physically handicapped students. Special Education Teachers provide academic and social supports in a variety of content areas and provide positive behavioral supports intended to enhance learning in accordance with the IDEA, NCLB and state and local guidelines. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Develop and implement teaching strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of educational deficiencies. * Instruct students in academic subjects, using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition, in order to reinforce learning and to meet students' varying needs and interests. * Instruct students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance and self-sufficiency, such as hygiene, safety and food preparation. * Confer with parents, guardians, group home staff, administrators, testing specialist, social workers, and professionals to develop individual educational plans designed to promote students educational, physical, and social development. * Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lesions promoting learning, following approved curricula. * Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve student's behavioral and academic problems. * Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory-and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory. * Establish and enforce rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain order among the students for whom they are responsible. * Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects, and communicate those objectives to students. * Maintain accurate and complete student records, and prepare reports on students and activities, as required by laws and administrative regulations. * Meet with parents, staff and guardians to discuss their student's progress, and to determine their priorities for their student and their resource needs. * Monitor instructional assistants to ensure that they adhere to our programs special education requirements. * Observe and evaluate student performance, behavior, and social development. * Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate. * Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities. * Prepare classrooms for class activities and provide a variety of materials and resources for students to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and imaginative play. * Prepare for assigned classes, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors. * Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines. * Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate student progress. * Supervise, evaluate, and plan assignments for teacher assistants. * Teach and model socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement. * Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops as well as complete certification courses in order to maintain and improve professional competence and special education state certification. * Attend staff meetings, and serve on committees as required. * Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of programming for common students. * Be familiar with and manager data related to our behavior management program. * Perform administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading. A.) from four-year college or university; preferably in education or related field, eligibility for state special education certification.
