This key Strategic Architect role will be responsible for improving end-user experience, reducing development lead times, and maximizing return on investment for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Integrated Data Repository (IDR). The IDR is a multi-platform enterprise warehouse and analytics environment that integrates relational databases (Teradata) and a semi-structured distributed file system (Hadoop).


As a trusted advisor to the government and third-party contractors, the Strategic Architect will provide strategic direction to make the IDR a state-of-the-art, high-performing Data Warehouse environment that supports data landing, data integration, data exploration, advanced data analytics, data visualizations, and data archival at scale. The Strategic architect will establish a roadmap to achieve targeted goals, maintain awareness of the new technologies, develop implementable solutions using existing and/or new technologies to support business needs, present periodic technical briefings to the government, and lead solution development and design sessions with the IDR team.


The successful candidate will:

  • Build consensus among customer’s senior and executive management around strategic goals
  • Identify practical, cost effective, and user-focused solutions to support business needs.
  • Engage with customer’s technical architecture review board to answer questions and evaluate alternative solutions
  • Define a roadmap consisting of achievable, measurable, incremental milestones that contribute to long term goals.
  • Define metrics and dashboards to monitor progress against strategic objectives.
  • Communicate complex ideas effectively, adapting vocabulary and depth of detail as appropriate for a given audience.
  • Work closely with the engineers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach as a hands-on technical leader
  • Conduct formalized analysis of alternatives, addresses complex architectural challenges, reviews and approves technical solutions, and supports issue resolution.
  • Provide detailed level-of-effort estimates, risk assessments, and cost/benefit trade-off analysis to support management decisions and planning.
  • Work closely with product vendors to understand product roadmaps and potential application to business needs.
  • Collaborate with external application architects to understand the technical needs with the goal of minimizing external resource requirements and operational impact to the greatest practical extent.
  • Support periodic bid and proposal activities including solution design and development, proposal writing, and cost estimation.
Remote opportunity- must be willing to travel from time to time for on-site meetings. 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline or equivalent work experience
  • Post-graduate Degree (e.g., Masters, PhD) in related discipline preferred
  • Requires 15+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience working as a contractor for the federal government supporting large-scale healthcare IT projects
  • Understanding of the IT lifecycle gate review process used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
  • Experience managing Medicare and Medicaid data and other Protected Health Information
  • Experience leading data and information architecture for petabyte-scale enterprise data warehouses
  • Experience developing applications in a mulita-platform environment, involving an IBM mainframe, Teradata relational databases, and Hadoop distributed file systems.
  • Experience with Data Visualization, analytic, and reporting tools (e.g., Microstrategy, Tableau, SAS, and Business Objects)
  • Experience with ETL tools (e.g., Informatica).
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain positive rapport and build trust within a diverse stakeholder community
