About the Position:
Duty location: You will be working in the US Army Research Institute (ARI) located at Ft. Belvoir, VA. This position is within ARI's Foundational Science Research Unit (FSRU), which is responsible for the conduct of basic research supporting all ARI topics (e.g., personnel testing and psychometrics, leadership and leader development, training and learning, team and organizational effectiveness), as well as early applied research focused on the assessment and understanding of unit processes, adaptability, and effectiveness.
Management would prefer applicants that have experience in behavioral science with significant concentration in industrial/organizational psychology, psychometrics, personnel testing, cognitive psychology, social psychology, experimental psychology, or closely related field and have research experience in hypothesis development, research design, data collection, statistical analysis of data, and report writing in one or more of the listed concentration areas.
U.S. Army Research Institute's (ARI) Science and Technology (S&T) research is focused on developing innovative measures and methods to improve and enhance the Soldier lifecycle and human capital management that encompasses a wide range of topics (e.g., personnel, training, leader development, human resources, human relations) at the individual, unit, and organizational level by conducting scientific research and providing behavioral and social science expertise needed to inform human resource policies and strategies, develop fundamental theories, and investigate new domain areas in behavioral and social sciences with high potential impact on Army issues.

Basic Requirement for a Research Psychologist:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) with a major or equivalent in psychology.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.
Specialized experience is defined as: experience conducting research (e.g., hypothesis development, research design, data collection, statistical analysis of data, or report writing) in relevant areas of the behavioral and social sciences (e.g., personnel, training, leader development, human resources, and human relations). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:
Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-12: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the position.
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-12: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education in excess of 36 hours (total semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
- Education above Minimum Qualification Level
- Ability to Identify Researchable Problems and Plan Research
- Ability to Conduct Research and Interpret Data
- Ability to Coordinate and Support Research Projects
